Default Sam Bush playing something other than Hoss?

Ok let me start by clarifying - I'm sure this was the exception not the rule. But this was the first time I'd ever seen him play a different mandolin. I've read in interviews that he also plays his signature F-5, but this doesn't look like that either.

Obviously it's some kind of Gibson F-5; anyone have any other info (or educated guesses) regarding the instrument he is playing here?
At first blush I thought maybe it was a Gold Rush, but I thought they had fern inlays instead of the flower pot. Then I thought maybe F-9, since there doesn't seem to be back, fretboard, or peghead binding. But there's the "The" in front of Gibson, and again the flower pot.

Also, anyone know if he's talked about this mandolin anywhere? I guess it might not even be his, could just be something he was handed for this session.

I have nothing to offer but speculation, but I expect Gibson would make Sam Bush anything he wants, and no pro musician would be caught owning just one mandolin. Backup instruments are necessary.

I can't remember the story behind this one -- I think it was some kind of award or gift? -- but if you follow his Instagram, he fairly regularly showcases this one and his other instruments when he does promo videos for shows.

Recently I've seen him play an old A-2/A-4 style, a newer Sam Bush model, a blacktop F-12(?), a different Gold Rush with block inlays, a Mandocaster, and a couple guitars. (I assume he owns all of them.) Last year when I saw him live, he mostly played Hoss, with a little bit of mandocaster and fiddle.

I believe that’s the same F5G with a gold top like a Les Paul referenced here:

Yup, he talked about a lot of his mandolins in the interview he did with the Fretboard Journal (including why he wasn't connected with Gibson anymore: https://www.fretboardjournal.com/pod...-225-sam-bush/

Isn't that one of the super limited run Gold Top F5Gs? I saw a sibling instrument in concert last year played by Brent Truitt in the Steeldrivers
    Mandolin: Kentucky KM150
Other instruments: way too many, and yet, not nearly enough.

Wow, between his instagram and that podcast there was certainly plenty to nerd-out over. He does call out that mandolin in particular as an "F-5G finished like a gold top Les Paul." So that settles that. Just scrolling through his instagram feed that one pops up quite a bit, as well as what looks like a gold top F-5L with block inlays, at LEAST two different Sam Bush signature models (just going by the difference in the way the fretboard ends between the earlier and the newer models), and that black-top F-style. I'm sure there are more I'm missing (not to mention the resonator, various electrics, etc).

I guess this is old news to folks who've been paying better attention; but that gold top just really caught my eye in the video. Certainly is a neat looking instrument, and the shoutout it gets in the podcast confirms its more than just a looker haha.

That bit about ending his business relationship with Gibson was interesting. Its cool to know he still thinks highly of their mandolins (or at least specifically Dave Harvey's work) even if the same can't be said for their strings. I wonder if Gibson worked something out with him since then? It seems like they must have, since GC has the Sam Bush F-5 up for preorder on their website:

Like many of us on the cafe, Sam Bush does suffer from M.A.S. After reading these posts, he seems to have it worse than I first thought.

I know Sam was presented a blonde or gold topped Gibson with the telluride Mountains done in inlay on the headstock, but I don’t think that’s this one

He played a different tune with the same mandolin on the way up the mountain:

He has stated that Hoss doesn’t cope well with the cold dry weather of places like telluride anymore. But that’s a great video.

I came across that one when I was scouring his instagram; it looks very similar to the one in these videos but it is trimmed out like an F-5L instead of an F-5G and has block inlays similar to Hoss. Hard to tell if the top is blonde or gold, but the sides (and presumably back) are more of a blonde than the darker "mahogany" stain on this one.

It sounds like a fair number of these came about (directly or indirectly) from his association with Gibson. Has anybody heard anything about the SB signature coming back? It's still up on the guitar center website but I can find nothing on the subject as far as a press release or anything like that. Would this mark the first change to the mandolin line under the new management?

Here is Sam playing a different Hoss, Wheel Hoss.
It’s the player to my ears, not the pick or the mandolin.

I understand Gibson has made on 7 of these Goldtop (GT_ models) and Sam has the first (as you see him play riding up the mountain). I picked up (what I am told is #7 - though they are not numbered as is my Adam Steffey model). I love it - am honored to play it and its my go to for a 60's rock band I play at regularly. Frank Solivan installed a K&K pickup. I hear Sierra Hull as one as well. Wish I knew who had the others...chances are they are not low lifes like me LOL
