Default Gibson EM-1235 with TWO MANDOLIN NECKS

    Freaky.

i've seen these with a standard guitar neck and a mandolin neck, or a tenor guitar neck and a mandolin neck.

This appears to have an 8-string mandolin neck and a 4-string mandolin neck, both of the same scale length (or pretty close to it).

    I doubt it's worth $149K but you can't deny it's cool.

I'm puzzling over what the use for this would be. Maybe I lack imagination at the moment, but I can't think of one. Can someone enlighten me as to its utility?

I wonder if Jethro Burns ever considered one of these. I bet he would have made it sing.

I could see it if one neck was mandolin and one was OM. That, I could get some use out of. I just don't get two of the same scale length. Nah, not for me. YMMV and that's cool, too.

I think they were going for a mandolin equivalent to the Double 12 guitar: one neck with single courses, the other neck with doubled courses. Perhaps the upper neck was strung in octaves?

I wonder if they'd take $49,000 for it?

Homer did have a Duo-Sonic, but he also had the famous triple-gold Stratocaster that fender Reissued as the HLE(Haynes Limited Edition).Click image for larger version.

Most likely because I'm in the UAE, with these calculations being computer-generated – the shipping (to me) alone is $4,995!

I'd love to know who "custom ordered" it.

Very cool. If I hit the lottery [well, I guess I'd have to play first], I might give it a whirl. It would definitely turn some heads.

For that price you could buy a Loar...... and I highly doubt it sounds as good as any 1000$ solid body electric mando being sold around these forums......

Gibson humbucking pickups from that era are legendary, so that doubleneck may sound incredible.

Perhaps you're wondering if this is the highest price anyone's ever seen for an electric mandolin.

    No, it is not.

I believe that distinction is still held by Nudie Cohn's Mosrite:

A bit overkill but one neck is double course while the other is single. Here is a picture of an EDS 1235 with mandolin and tenor guitar.Click image for larger version.

I recall one of the mandolin/tenor doublenecks being for sale not that long ago, at less than a tenth of what's being asked for the 2-mandolin version.

"But there are only so many people out there with $400,000 and an appreciation for a custom-built electric mandolin that comes in a blue velvet case."
I suppose the number of people who have $400,000 and an appreciation for a custom-built electric mandolin
is much larger than anyone who would actually buy it. Where do you find those people? Mandolin Cafe!
