Recommendation for an electric?

My favorite electric is the Gibson EM200 Florentine from the mid 50's to late 60's. Hard to beat that old sound with the P90 pickup.

Look for a used Kentucky four stringer or a Crafter a/e (Ovation style).

Hm. I don't see any solid-body mandos on the Crafter website.

It might just be me, but I can't see spending two or three grand on a practice instrument.

I'm a fan of Jon Mann (Manndolins). I have a 5 string and 8 string from him. I prefer the 5 string by far as the 8 tends to have a phased sound to it. I tune the 5 string to have a high B (so it's GDAEB) which I prefer over a low C (which gets muddled IMO).

Asian made Telecaster shaped 8 string, 2 pickup electric mandolin available in many different brand names. Mine is the Morgan Monroe offering. It's ideal for your needs playing it unplugged late at night. Should you ever need to play plugged in, they work just fine but for live performances, they could use upgraded pickups due to the quiet E sting response. ymmv
