I'm a bluegrass flatpicker who just moved to Lawrence for University and was wondering if there are any bluegrass mando players in the area, or more advanced jams I can check out. KBA Winterfest and Winfield are both on my schedule.

I don’t think there’s any players at all in Kansas. Never hear of them

Very funny Bill. I think there is plenty of music in Lawrence lyian. The site started out of there and you'll find out who's who in Lawrence.
We few, we happy few.
Head over to Mass Street Music. It's a good place to start.

well mass street as mentioned. Lawrence also host the kansas state fiddle and picking contest
in august. For variety there is the kansas ciity mandolin orchestra
2012 Weber Bitterroot F5.
There's at least one mandolin player in that town. It's known for its rowdy mandolin crowd. Check out the No Mountain String Band. I hear their mandolin player has some serious chops.

There are a lot of mandolin players in Lawrence, but it's a really varied kind of scene. Advanced? Some. Not so advanced, plenty. There's a classical segment, plenty of middle aged Winfield types, some college aged... I can't even say I know everyone and I live there and run this mess. Keep an out on these bars where bands that are sort of the Winfield crowd and the like tend to gig: Gaslight Gardens, Replay Lounge, Lucia, S&S Coffee. There's a celtic jam on Sunday afternoons upstairs at Henry's downtown--also a really nice place to have a Guinness, assuming you're of age, but not a lot of mandolin action in that one. If you want to see what mandolin in a gypsy jazz quartet sounds like look up Mire Pral on Facebook. We're playing downtown 3-4 nights a month at places like Eighth Street Taproom (last night), Eldridge Hotel, Replay Lounge, Kaw Valley Public House, Ryan's in Tonganoxie. When it's warm out there's a group that gathers for what they call "Pecan Grove" jams (a Winfield reference) at Gaslight on Sundays. As far as advanced jams I'd say those are probably not to be found. Lots of casual ones at homes but pretty beginner.
In Kansas City, every Monday at The Brick in the Crossroads is the Rural Grit Hour (actually like 2 1/2 hours) of open mic music that ranges from first-rate to the weirdest WTF kind of musical moments but always entertaining. Once in awhile you get your socks knocked by someone. Typically lots of people there sitting and watching that are quite talented. It's like Winfield parking lot condensed into one evening every Monday. If you drop by one of my gigs the guys I play with all know the scene pretty well and could advise. Two of them have played in many of the alt-grass kinds of bands (or still do) and one of our guitar players is also the banjo player and founder of the super thrash grass (my term) group Split Lip Rayfield.

Yea, I wasn't going to out Scott but there he is. You're lucky lyian to be where you are. Scott is a great fellow and been an inspiration to me for 18 years now. Someday I'll learn to play this thing too.
