Default Strings for Hathway Octave Mandolin

I have a newly acquired (second-hand) Hathway OM1 with a cedar top. It's strung with the Newtone 14/24/34/48 gauge set that Paul Hathway recommends. I'm finding these rather heavy, so I wondered if anyone has any experience of alternative gauges on these instruments. My problem may be compounded by what I feel is a rather high action (about 3.5mm at the 12th fret). I should probably get this sorted, but any advice on strings would be much appreciated in the meantime.

Hi Varanus, welcome to the cafe. Don’t know the Hathaway and can’t recommend particular gauges but you should know that Newtone will put together sets of whatever gauge strings you want. Might help people reply if you could post the scale length.

Thanks Ray(T), and sorry, should have given the scale length. It's 530mm, ie just under 21-inches.
