Every time I pick up my mandolin the cat runs out of the room.

The cat is simply saying that you're better by far.

My cat did this, until I stopped throwing mandolins at her.

No reason to be insulted just because she/he chooses to be elsewhere during mandolin time. In this household, 2/3 dogs could not care less while Wiley-dog maintains serious opinions about instruments and even keys; she prefers D-maj because her song resides in that key. Mandolin or piano will find her at my knee and anything electric sends her running.

Same here - my cat runs out of the room as soon as I pull a case out of the closet . . . but then again, so does everyone else in the house,

Mine did the same thing at first, but now will at least stay in the room (albeit a safe distance away). I chalk it up to improved playing.

My wife's cat does the same as soon as I pull it off the wall hangar.

It just confirms my hunch that cats are evil, selfish creatures that smart people give away for free. At least that's the story my 2 Corgi's told me.

My wife is a cello teacher, and our labrador Buddy loves lying on the couch during lessons. One time however there was a beginning student with fairly wonky intonation.
Buddy sits up, looks at the student, then my wife, and walks out of the room!
I don't think the student realised she had been critiqued by a dog.

Cats are generally not very likely to know much about Kant's categorical imperative. Hence, no, don't be insulted.

Maybe if you’re feeling insulted by a cat, you might have other things to worry about other than your mandolin playing

    I think it's a frequency thing...

My cats love it when I practice double bass.

Pull out the banjo or the Dobro and they start getting antsy.

Pull out the mandolin and they leave or hide. Mandolin gets up there in frequency, and they're pretty penetrating too.

The cats are probably doing the closest thing they can to hearing protection.

My dog, btw, situates himself behind me on the couch and goes to sleep when I play mandolin. There's no accounting for taste.

Gotta remember, we never really know what we sound like in the audience. A person can't play an instrument and be out there listening at the same time.

Depends on the cat. I have a couple of cats who are really into it. I have shown this older photo on the Cafe before, but it is typical of Robyn's behavior. He loves to listen to me play my mandolin. I have also found this to be true of feral cats who have been trapped and are heading off for spay/neuter. Calms them right down.

You think that’s bad, my wife asked me if there wasn’t some place I could pick go where people would actually enjoy listening to it. So I’m booking a camp this summer.

My dogs are mandolin neutral except perhaps miffed they can’t get any lap time while I play.

Then I guess I'm really lucky he likes it! He is pretty big but to be honest, he's more hair than cat.
