    Default Briliancy done right

I-m happy to see that Brian Obrlin has posted a transcription of Howdy Forrester's version on https://www.mandoberlin.com/lessons/...ancy_Howdy.pdf -- which is superior to that of Sam Bush especially in the second part and the fourth bar of the first. You can hear it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RpI5JNMBxvo

I don't mind Bush's flashy stuff towards the end but it's his. I'll never understand why "everybody" else has to copy those variations. Find your own! As I did with Forrester's version more than 50 years ago.

Thanks for sharing, enjoyed hearing Howdy's version. It's a great tune. I learned it from a tab of Sam's version which was the first tab of it I found and I like but might vary it a little at times intentionally or not. I like how Sam plays it, how Howdy did too.

Interesting to hear Howdy's original version, but to my ear it's a little scratchy and pitchy and not quite as tight as I expected.

I still like Sam's (somewhat flashy) version a little better. And my own, which is based on Sam's (and by extension, Howdy's), but not quite as flashy. Now I have the original to steal ideas from as well. Thanks!

Thanks. Personally I appreciate the fact that it is standard and no TAB.

Perhaps an illustration of the phenomenon that grassers tend to learn from grassers alone. Another example would be Farewell Blues, bars 9-12. I believe BG bands play A,A,D,Eb whereas New Orleans bands use A7,A7,dm, eb dim which to my ears is more logical, or, at least, smoother. One further example would be Panhandle Rag. The original is in E, BG players often choose D, but a more important point is that grassers usually play IV-I-IV-V in the bridge where the original has IV-I-II-V. Grassers seem to shun the sound of a passing b9.

"And I tried real hard not to make this song sound like some other song that I might have written before
And if I did, that's because it's my style and style is based on limitations"

John Hartford "trying to do something to get your attention"

"that grassers tend to learn from grassers alone" I suppose in some cases that would be true, but there is something to be said for 'Keeping a tradition alive"
is why perhaps an old time fiddler might study more Bruce Molsky than Darol Anger.

as for Sam he has a lot of Jethro Burns inspiration which has almost nothing to do with Bluegrass.
as for passing B9 chords, probably not gonna find a lot of examples in bluegrass, but its a style and as the man said "style is based on limitations"

I didn't talk about passing B9 chords but passing b9 notes, in this case g over F#7 (in the key of E).

Version? That's a completely different tune.

My main objection to Bush's version is bars 3-4 of the second section, which in Forrester's version bounces off the open a string. Bush plays a zig-zag figure which to my ears is lame in comparison.
