Thread: Strap recommendations?

  1. #1

    Default Strap recommendations?

I'm currently using a piece of old twine to hold up my F5, and I feel like I need something more substantial and possibly adjustible. Is there a brand or kind that you all would recommend?

I’ve bought a dozen different straps for A and F style mandolins but currently have Lakota straps on my two mandolins and one mandola. I love the look and feel.

Another happy Lakota user here. Can’t recall offhand which models, but one’s a round braided strap made for F styles (though I’m using it equally effectively on a Rigel CT 110 presently). The other is a flat unbraided strap I’m using on my A style. The other recommendations above are very nice quality as well, the Lakota’s are just available locally.

I've been thrilled with Long Hollow Softy straps. Got my first one nearly 16 years ago for my Rigel. Mandos have come and gone but the Long Hollows stick around. I love how they can be used on either A or F styles. Both my Eastmans have them as well as the Rigel.

Old camera straps with black 200lb climbing cord and a slide knot is one idea.

Another is using second hand shop old even damaged leather belts and cord.
They are almost free, and you’ve made something for yourself.

Nothing but a rawhide boot lace with a hangman’s noose on each end works for me.

The Longhollow Big Softy works great for an A5 but the wide soft part ends up in the middle of your back on an F5.

If you would like a challenge, buy a book on weaving leather strips and a book on how to weave 4 strips into a strap. Honestly it works, I made one this was and I love it.

The waist band of an old pair of jeans makes a great mandolin strap...

There's an ad on Classifieds today for Massimo Gatti straps from Italy. I have two and they are great.

I will also recommend Bailey straps - I received one with a mandolin I purchased. It is well made and beautiful.

I do happen to prefer round braided (over a piece of rope) leather straps. The rope gives it a little more substance and they hold their shape and last a long time. What I like about a round strap is when you put it on you never have to mess with, flat straps you have to adjust and make sure that it lays the correct way.
Randy Hogan and Lyn Dudenbostel daughter made really good ones, but I am not sure either are making them at this time?

This is like asking what mandolin should I buy. Everyone ends up with their personal favorite and touting it. It’s like me with pickups. I’ve yet to put any in a mandolin, but once I got a set of Dazzos in a guitar, I liked them so much I just continued putting them in every guitar I bought. I’d have a hard time getting anything other than a Bailey, though I know there are a dozen other options. I do have a very nice round braid that came with a mandolin, but I don’t have a clue whose. And a bootlace just seems so right on my A 1.

The off-the-rack mando straps at guitar shops work just fine.
