Well I'll be..... just found out this great mandolin I own, is on the Grammy award winning Michael Cleveland and Flamekeeper record "Tall Fiddler".
Builder is Gary Vessel. I bought this instrument because I wanted to own a mandolin built by a local builder. I knew it was played by Nathan Livers, but thought...."well I guess that's cool". Funny stuff! Play mostly Monroe, old time, and blues on it. Just was happy to support a local builder. Good stuff!

Oh ya, I saw that in the classifieds. Seemed like a good score. Vessel makes some killer Trad mandolins.

Gary's work I believe harkens back to the ancient days of old! I'd be surprised if he made anything that sounded terrible! Hell he could put strings and nails on a 2x4 and get some sweet tones out of it! Unfortunately I'm a bit short on cash so my Vessel Loar tribute my friend may buy as he naturally fell in some serious Love or should I say Lust when he played her, but on a bright side Gary is building a special A-5 eventually so I may have to go for that baby if the cash works out!
Mr. Vessel builds some of the best new stuff out there IMHO! For me my top 5 builders are and its tough as there are so many phenomenal builders! Vessel, Apitius, Duff, Gilchrist, and well have to say it Gibson "as Gibson from all years have certain great qualities and I believe mandolins made under David Harvey are the best Gibson has offered since the Loars and Ferns of old! David has brought many special and low production models to the front! Just amazing instruments!

I wish....that was taken while the wife and I were on vacation in Mendocino County.
I was practicing and set it there, and my wife saw it and took a pic.

Saw Nathan play that at a couple of festivals and workshops. Did he leave any notes in it for you? He is an awesome player.

It is a cool picture of a special instrument and view. It is good your wife thought to take that photo.
