Sorry if this has been asked in the forum before. Can anyone point me towards someone building flat top mandocellos? Like something similar to the Weber Tamarack? I'm looking for something affordable (2-3k) that isn't guitar-bodied.

You may (or may not) have some luck placing a want add for a Gypsy MC in the classifieds. Walt has, unfortunately, passed on, but I know he built at least a few of these. As for modern builders, sorry, nothing’s popping into my head presently. If that changes after my second cup kicks in I’ll update...

I would ask some of the established flattop mandolin and flattop octave makers if they might want to make one. Sawchyn, Big Muddy, Crystal Forest come to mind. Lots of others here.
APC in Portugal makes a mandocello. Here is a video demo:
Also Dammann in Virginia. Here's a guy playing a ten string:

You might give Nick Apollonio a call.
The North American Guitar, formerly Cotten Music, has a flattop mandocello from Cafe member Joe Mendel for $2795:

Santa Cruz Guitars offers a mandocello.... Obviously a flattop.
An Algerian mandole (the one with 1/2 tone frets, not the one with 1/4 tone frets), can also got the bill. It is basically a classical flat top and back mandocello and is tuned the same way.
Thanks everyone!
Herb Taylor might also be one to consider. He has an archtop two-point in the classifieds for above your price range but could probably build you one with simpler appointments and remain in budget: https://www.mandolincafe.com/ads/147277#147277

Hi there. My name is Maurice McMurry. I built two flat top mandocellos during my association with Mid Missouri Mandolin Co. as well as all of the Mid Mo octaves and bouzoukis. I also built 10 octaves and a bouzouki as contract pieces for big muddy from 2015-2019. I am currently trying to get my own shop going and hope to make another mandocello in the future. Perhaps I could build one for you.
