    Default 2020 NAMM Show Report

Just in the door a few minutes ago.

First surprise: Calton is normally right by the entrance I come in but to my surprise, they're not at the show so won't be able to visit with anyone about their new cases.

First stop after that is the Weber booth and it appears the two new models just sold. I will likely be able to confirm who that is later but got to play both and of course they will be there the rest of the show. The Redrocks and Pronghorn bothin the neighborhood of $4500 retail which surprised me a bit. I thought possibly $6-7 each. Really nice rounded back sides so super comfortable, gold EVO frets and a neck profile--of course subject--to my liking. Beautiful finish on both that and the Pronghorn.

Redrocks is going to Quality Musical Instruments for All Levels in Port Townsend. Pronghrn is going to The Mandolin Store.

New model that didn't make the most recent news release: Road Dog "F" with F-Holes, a real bluegrass sounding model to these ears, also in the $4,500 price range but don't quote me on that. This from Ryan.

May not have more pictures for a few hours but will work towards that goal. Meanwhile wanted to get this thread in place in case anyone else is here .

FYI, Weber has a couple of new octave models and I hope to get to those at some point but may not be today, can't be sure.

I wish people would stop posting pictures of Weber's . . . it makes it very hard to say that I am over my MAS . . . . .

First pictures of the semi-gloss lacquer matching Waterloo Mandolin and Guitar, so new Collings hasn't even photo'd it. The mandolin is going to The Music Emporium, the guitar not yet spoken for. Yes, I played it and needed to get away from it, fast.

How does that Waterloo guitar sound? Obviously, I'm sure it sounds good, but could you describe it a bit?

There are a number of videos online of them being played. This is just my opinion, and I'm a fan of early jazz but these have that kind of chunky sound that goes wonderful with that early sound.

I just paid a visit to my local Weber dealer. After playing a handful of various Weber models (and buying an overpriced guitar capo), I thought on the drive home that if the dealer had a hypothetical model which seems to be the Road Dog, I would have bought it. That Road Dog kicks @$&!!!

Sorry, Fender electric tenor fans, folks at the booth said they didn't have it at the show. But I won't be surprised if someone else finds it there after all, like last year.

Thanks. From what I've been able to gather they announced the Tenor Tele last year as a limited "alternate reality" run of under 1,000 that just started shipping a few weeks ago. Apparently once those are gone, they're gone and the Fender 2020 lineup doesn't show anything in a tenor.

    Oh well...

More new models from Weber! First up, the Exotic Kona "A" Octave with F holes, a real piece of eye candy for sure and a lot of deep resonance.

Top wood, Back/Side, Binding: Figured Koa
    Price $7,999.00

Weber's head luthier Ryan Fish pictured holding it. Cool turtle inlay on the headstock. We may have a close-up shot of that on some of the cameras. I'll look for it and post it if I find it.

Star sighting. I see a guy out by the food trucks on a break and think, "wow, that looks like Leland Sklar." And it was! Brief chat with him, what a genuinely nice guy. Asked him who he's playing with. "Phil Collins at the moment and doing the GRAMMYS soon." A living legend of bass. An honor to meet him. As a friend back home told me after I texted him, "Leland is probably now as old as he's looked for a long time."

These guys are the greatest. One year I was hanging beside a booth and Tony Levin stops beside me and started chatting. You meet the nicest people at NAMM.

    Mando people sighting:

Yesterday got a a text around 11 a.m. from Adrian from Northfield that he'd just landed, asked if anything was going on. Wasn't, I was just working, offered to pick him up at the airport, 15 minutes later he's in the car and we're headed to his hotel but not before hanging out a bit and catching up. Few hours later Dan Gabel from Peghead Nation texts asks what I'm up to. "Nothing, want to catch some dinner?" 4-5 hours later I drop him off at his hotel and back to the airport to pick up my family.

Today at the show: Christie and Walter Carter of Carter Vintage Guitars, Walter Ellis and Cathy Pelosi of Ellis/Pava Mandolins and Precision Pearl, Steve Sorensen, RA Beattie and Tom Bedell of Two Old Hippies/Weber/Breedlove. Dan Skatvold and others at the Eastman booth, Steve McCreary and Alex Reub of Collings (and others). Probably leaving someone out and I apologize if I have. Tomorrow, couple of meetings and a very big announcement that is going to surprise a LOT of people. Nope, no business getting sold, no one merging. This is out of the clear blue, but shouldn't be a surprise once announced.

Made a quick stop at Gibson and proclaimed their huge ballroom, "988 guitars and 2 mandolins." Might have been a few other mandolins but if there's any doubt, just get over it. Room was packed.

Nice chat with Carters and their efforts to increase the size of their building. Will be interesting to see that unfold. Big job.

Yours truly playing the new semi-gloss lacquer matching Waterloo Mandolin. My daughter is taking some of these pictures so already more of me in them than all of the past NAMM Shows combined. Yes, I adore the Waterloo Mandolins. They're fun, they sound good, they make people happy. Can't find anything wrong with that.
