I went to a week long workshop with Jethro in 1983, and he was using Stay In Tune strings on his Washburn signature model because he had an endorsement deal with them. He said that he used whatever strings he was given for free. I imagine that he used the same ones on Red.

I think that Jethro was using a phosphor bronze set, but it has been 37 years...

I recall early on (1970's?) he used Black Diamond! In the 80's he taught and hung out at The Guitar Works, Evanston IL and I think they maintained his mandolins for him in that time frame. They carry GHS and he may have had those on from time to time. And John, you right about the Stay In Tune endorsement, I've seen one of their ads with Jethro as well as remember hearing him talk about them. Whatever strings he was supplied with was indeed his preference. He picked them all with a Fender teardrop shape pick, very small, thin, sometimes referred to as a "jazz guitar" pick by music stores.
