I've honestly not listened to a whole lot of Tristan's stuff, but he and Molly absolutely tear up one of my favorite old time tunes. He really pulls some fabulous tone out of that old F-4.

Yeah -he has suddenly became prevalent on Face book offering lessons and videos, the "New Chance Blues" vid got me interested, a hell of a picker to be sure, seems to have a very traditional approach.

"Mean Old Timer, He's got grey hair, Mean Old Timer he just don't care
Got no compassion, thinks its a sin
All he does is sit around an play the Mandolin"
That's a Melvin Wine tune. Very prettily done.

That rendition is "quit your day job and chase the dream" good! I very much appreciate Tristan's stylings on this. It's obvious he put a lot of thought into it and how to make it sound "old" while expanding on the single note pattern that was played in the day.
I neither want to invoke nor provoke the Old Time Police, but I'd suggest the version that he is playing originally comes from John Morgan Salyer. I wouldn't doubt at all that Melvin had it in his repertoire, but I think the version that has been making the rounds in that crowd (Tristan, Molly, Allison deGroot, Tatiana Hargreaves, et al) is virtually note for note what John played. I think Bruce Molsky plays and teaches it regularly.
Surprisingly, the original Salyer recording has not been put up on Youtube for me to post a convenient link. One of the two original Salyer recordings I have on CD has a mandolin playing along in the background with a guitar.
