Need help valuing a Gibson, two Adams and a Morgan Monroe

Unfortunately my father-in-law passed away recently and I'm doing some research to assist my mother-in-law in getting values for his mandolins. I apologize up front if I violate any forum rules or if I posted this on the wrong section. This appeared to be the best forum to connect with enthusiasts since no one in our family knows anything about these instruments.

Any information you can provide would be appreciated. We will be selling these instruments locally and I would really appreciate any advice on how to price them. My father-in-law did not have any life insurance so most of the proceeds will go towards paying for his funeral service.

I have done some Google searches and spoke with a local guitar store but the owner was not well versed in mandolins. I have not been able to find much information on the two Adams. It seems they were hand made by Johnny Adams in Florida but his website is no longer operational so I don't know much about them. I have found a couple older for sale ads in the $1,200 ballpark. The guitar dealer recognized the Gibson as something desirable and thought the value was at least $5,000 but he couldn't be sure or more specific. The Morgan Monroe seems to be in the $600 range. Again, any help you can provide to make sure my mother-in-law gets the right value for these would be appreciated.

The first Adams is number 47 made in 2013.


The second Adams is number 68 made in 2017.


The Gibson is a 1974 F5


I don't have much information on the Morgan.

I can only help you on the Gibson F5. You probably know the 70's were the peak of their worst years. Some bad, some really bad and lots worse than others. Price various on these in this condition from $1600 to $3200.

The Adams, maybe 800-1000 a piece, "I don't know his work but they look well made!" the MMonroe- around 500 and the Gibson maybe 1800 on a great day-I say this as Tom mentioned above these are not real desirable years for Gibson but re-worked it can be made a whole lot better but then there is the time and know how and that's not cheap!

Right now, I am unable to get $1200.00 Adams number 72 which is about a year old and was set up in July. Not much resale there.

I think the valuation on that Morgan Monroe is really generous. I don't know if you would get $400.00 for that. You were also correct about the Guitar Store owner not being well versed in mandolins. The value given by f5loar is more realistic. See if the guitar store owner will give you 4 grand for it.

As for the Adams, you have someone with the same brand giving you what he hasn't been able to get for his. That should be a guide for you. They do look decent but a relatively unknown brand doesn't always jump up in the market.

If you're looking to see what the market really is put them on eBay with a very high reserve. What the bidding ends at should give you an idea of what they are really worth.

I'm with Mike on that older Morgan Monroe. That's not one of their higher end models. I would say $250-400 for it, depending on condition.

The Morgan in all Black-I really like but yeah I think I said 500 bucks, maybe a bit less but it still has potential as does the others, The Gibson has a flowerpot reminiscent of say a 1927 F-4? I've always loved the inlays on these years of F-5's eeven though the sound was tinny and not the best wood or shading choice!
