It would probably lend itself to the mandolin bass, at least it wouldn't be bowed

The best part of that video was the nice high-pitched cello playing in the background.

As a man who paid off his mortgage playing upright bass, I'm afraid that video will give me nightmares tonight.

Methinks that Mssr. Vuilluame might have had something extra in his wine when he conceived that thing. If he built 3 of them, he must have had a whole barrel of "Vin avec Champignons."

This is closer but it's not even close.

Well... if he had that much to drink, including the champignons, which I assume you thought were akin to a DMT experience, maybe that would explain why his name went from Mr. Wuillaume to "Mssr. Vuilluame"

If the lowest “C” is below the threshold of human hearing, how do you tune the thing?

I suppose I also ought to ask if it would fit in an overhead locker!

Maybe they should be thought of as cables or ropes, not strings!

It sure did get my cats' attention, and they didn't know what to think of it. They may have thought the tablet was purring, I'm not sure. Normally they pay no attention to sounds coming from the tablet even though they like music played live, but this thing really caught their interest.

For a mando bass to be this size it would have to be about 6 or 7 times larger.

I forgot about that Mandolin Store sign. I'm not sure it's deep enough but close

I had the opportunity last spring to see and hear the other working one (Montreal Symphony playing Brahms).

Hans Zimmer actually recorded a bunch of samples of an Octobass in order to incorporate them into his compositions.

As a bass player though I have experimented with some low tunings before. I had one of my 6 strings strung up with a F0 for a while. It doesn't serve much practical purpose, but it's an interesting effect, something that's more felt than heard. Took a .200 string for it to have a decent tension and tone to it.

Here's a full length portrait of the OB I took when I visited the MIM in Phoenix. If you are ever in Phoenix do not ass up going to this museum. Really fun. When I visited this was in the lobby and one of the first things you see. As you can see this barely clears the ceiling.
