Default Your favourite mandolin picture of 2019

I was looking through the pictures on my phone today and got to wondering ...

What is your favourite mandolin related picture that you took this year? Post them here!

We were very fortunate to host John Reischman and the Jaybirds a few weeks ago and took this picture on my phone. There were quite a few contenders, but I like this one ...

Though I did not take this picture, it is my favorite for 2019. Playing mandolin with a hundred or so other musicians, well to my mind there are not many other things I would rather be doing.

I love a good mandolin picture as much as anyone here. A beautiful mandolin is of course extremely photo worthy. But I remind myself that the instrument is the means to the music. And one cannot take a picture of the music.

This picture may not look like much to anyone but me, but it was taken after an evening of playing with a group of friends I have been playing with periodically for many years. That particular evening we'd been playing in a hotel in Philadelphia, but we've played in a number of East Coast cities. Due to changes in the lives of two of our five members, opportunities to play together will now become rare if at all, but this one photo of me as we were packing up at the end of that evening will be a treasured memory. There are 'better' photos of the band, but this grainy shot captures something in me the others miss. And I will miss those evenings. Also, I wouldn't post photos of the other members without their permission, so this one is only me. Click image for larger version.

I am quite partial toward Weber mandolins. Was travelling through Montana last summer and stopped to see Bruce and Mary. Here they are with an old Beartooth A model that Bruce was tweaking. What a special day for me.

This is mine... because of several reasons.

    1. I tried several times to learn how to play the mandolin, but failed every time. And it was a crushing disappointment to me. Not because of the personal failure aspect of it - though that's never fun - but because I felt a genuine connection to the instrument, and I really wanted to become somewhat proficient at it.

    2. I recently had a friend come to my house and pick, and listening to him play his Northfield so well, I fell in love with the instrument all over again. So I tried one more time, bought a used Breedlove mandolin and applied myself. And with his help and support, this time I'm seeing actual progress. I'm still nowhere near a mandolin player, but I can see some positivity where there was none - and that's so exciting to me.

    3. I didn't know the pic was taken. As I shared on this forum before, I have friends come to my house every Sunday. I cook lunch for everyone, we eat together, then we eventually pick on some tunes. It's not a structured event, it's just for fun and giggles. And on that Sunday, evidently, I felt safe enough among my friends to play the mandolin in front of people and just jam away.

So this picture represents failure, but also what I love so much about music: perseverance, good times and good friends. And love. I am blessed with wonderful and remarkably talented friends, may I never take them for granted and always appreciate them for all the beauty, kindness and generosity of spirit they bring to my life.

I was lucky enough to get front row seats to Marty Stuart at the small theater in the Country Music Hall of Fame. Fantastic show, Marty never disappoints.

Playing with the band at the beginning of 2019. We're playing once more at a friend's house while awaiting the new year, and perhaps that will be the last time. But I hope not!
