    Yes. Dropping the root (let the bass and guitar play that note) allows for 4 note extended chords on the mandolin. Then you get into the Don Stiernberg question, "Is it a C6 or an Am7?" Answer - yes.

    If it leads to a D or D7 chord it is probably an Am7. If it is the last chord of a song in C major, it is definitely a C6 (one of my favorite endings).
