Hey guys, Thanks for all the posts and the video clip too. I am admittedly new to the mandolin but have a been a guitar and steel player my whole life doing everything from touring to sessions and all the not so fun stuff as well. I have a deep love for mandolin and am working hard on it now. I know from past experience that buying and selling instruments ends up costing me way more in the end so I went for this beauty from out of the gate and I'm sure glad I did. I imagine this beauty will stay will me till I'm gone. If you have never seen or heard an Ellis up close they are something to behold. Even a newby like me can immediately recognize what a fine crafted mandolin this is in both tone and craftsmanship. I happen to work 2 blocks from Carter's Vintage Instruments so I was very lucky to be able to play some of the best mandolins made there. I choose the Ellis over a Gilchrist and many others even though my particular Ellis did not come from Carters. Anyway, I'm glad to be here and enjoy reading all the post and meeting you fine people.
Cheers!

But they were that good even before CNC machines

Handmade has become an unimportant concept to me. Much of what we admire about mandolin fit and finish come from the use of CNC machines. Doesn’t diminish
the end result at all. What I remember about the Ellis I played was it’s exqusit tone and playability.

Tom is a #######' genius. I couldn't help but be amazed at his operation. I don't know, but it seems to me Tom has invested an incredible amount of time and money in getting the machines to do exactly what he wants them to do. I certainly ain't gonna argue with the results... at the end of the day tools are tools...

Glad you are enjoying your Ellis Mike. What other high-end/well known makers of mandolins did you try before choosing the Ellis?
John A. Karsemeyer
Hi There,
Truth is I am new to Mandolin (kinda). In 1994 I actually made an F5 with the help of my buddy Cliff Sargent which I was lucky enough to get back and pass on to my son. I've been a guitar and steel guitarist for over 40 years but have a love for this instrument and decided it was time to get serious.
I live in Nashville now so spent the day at Carter's playing everything they had. To name a few:
Gilchrist
Gibson
Collings
Weber
Ellis
To my untrained ear the Ellis was the clear winner. Pure sweet tone, great bass, crystal clear highs and nice mids. Action was superb as expected. I had just bought a Gibson Fern which was a fine instrument but to me, the Ellis was clearly the one. I ended up buying #450 Ellis Tradition from a different store as it was a year old and of course a little less money so the Gibson went bye bye and the Ellis is now my prized Mandolin. I practice hard everyday and am making good headway. Most important, I am having great time and love playing.
By buying the best I could in the beginning will hopefully save me money in the long run and help me avoid MAS
