Micing mandolins for recording purposes...

I have a low level Breedlove Crossover FF. I bought an LR Baggs Radius for it - but haven't installed it. For some reason, I just don't want to deal with it, and when I played my mando live - of which, I have ZERO business doing that, but I don't care - I ended up mic'ing it with an EV CO4 mic. it did an OK job, and mostly, considering how I play, I can't imagine the mic would be the issue :D

Anyway, in the home studio, I have a Rode NT1A and a matched set of Rode M5s for vocals and acoustic guitars. As backups, or when I have guests, I have an MXL 770 condenser mic, and tonight I acquired an AKG P170.

What do you guys use? Live and in the studio?

Live I use an SM 57 because it’s good enough. In my studio I have a pair of Sure SM 81s and a Rode NT2 further out if I want more room sound.

I have the Bags radius and LOVE it ....clean , even sound pre-amped into my board .I find using a mic live is just a PAIN .
In the studio I use the same Rode Nt1a you're using . close mic-ed at the lower ( treble ) sound hole and I get fabulous results

I use Audio Technica 4040s in the studio but will sometimes plug it into my Fender Acoustasonic jr. and mic that as well, blending the two sounds.

My mic of preference for just about every instrument is a Sure 58 Beta . . . never a complaint.

A pair of KM86’s. Sometimes a KM86 with an 84.

Of course I sold all my equipment years ago.

I’ve used AT PRO35 for a clip on condenser. Also used the old standard SM 57 on a stand. Both work very well in different circumstances. But recently I had K & K pickups installed, and loving them for live situations through a Fishman amp.

Well, yeah... I looked into Royer once. And realized that I could still my rent for what they go after I'd paid for ALL the mics I own put together, so as great as they are, I had to bow out

After the holidays, I'm going to try an AT 2020. Does anyone have experience with this mic?

Yes! My buddy who is a wonderful mando player came to my house with his, and we recorded his track with it, and it sounded great. For the money they cost, they're hard to beat.
