Default Forgive me....for I have sinned.....

Made a quick stop in guitar center yesterday (give me a break, there not much in this area).

I went in the humidor room and looked around, a ton of guitars, one mandolin. Nothing to even mention, it doesn't have a shot in the mandolin world.

So, being a lover of pretty wood work, I observed some of the grain patterns on the guitars and admired the looks.

    And then....I sinned.

There was a.....dare I say it....a banjo. Another rarity in this area. I had never held or touched one...so I did.

Heavy dang thing it was. I quickly put it down as I felt my finger tips begin to burn in mandolin blasphemy.

I come before you to confess my sin...please don't ban me for a momentary moment of weakness.

Did you count the strings? How many were there? If it was more than four, I doubt you can be forgiven.

Touching it is probably ok. If you tried to play it that is another story altogether

When I discovered there's a tenor banjo and that this thing is tuned like a viola, it was hard to resist the impulse to find and try one. So far so good.

If it had four strings, no forgiveness necessary. If it had five, the mandolin world will never forgive you. If it had six, the banjo world will never forgive you

Depending on what kind of music you want to play, a tenor banjo can be a great instrument, with a fairly easy transition from mando. Variety is good.
I have a tenor, set up to play Irish trad with GDAE tuning and I [U]love it[U] for sessions or playing by myself. Don't rule one out completely.

Saying that the banjo was 'heavy' makes me think that there was a more than a little harmless looking and touching going on, in that clandestine little room.

Since you have confessed your sin, you will be forgiven - but must promise to do your best to avoid this situation again, and for penance you must play 3 Jethro Burns songs.

    Go in peace my child.

Meh, I owned a banjo once upon a time. I was trying to get my sister to move out of my house so I traded a guitar I didn't like for a banjo I didn't know how to play. The tactic failed but I sold the banjo 10 years later for $100 more than I had in it. I always hid the banjo when friends were around but put it on a stand next to the couch when relatives showed up.
Out of tune and out of time.

Look, all this banjo dissing has got to stop. There are so many reasons to own and play one. You can threaten children into good behavior both by telling them you’ll start playing one if they don’t straighten up. If that fails, you can wack them with it. None of that namby pamby hickory switch, or leather belt business. Got a bunch of unruly teenagers hanging around next door? You can clear them out in less than ten minutes. Get nailed for speeding close to the state line? They’ll let you off with a warning if you promise to leave the state. And if you are a corrections officer, you can tell them you work the solitary cell wing on the midnight shift and play to pass the time. I haven’t even touched on animal control yet.

I picked up a viola in 1983 and just discovered the mandolin about a year ago, so be careful. If you encourage me I'll go back to confusing myself with a new new instrument and I finally got the hang of reading treble clef...

I'll admit, like Richard J, I thought you'd put a capo on your mandolin, so I'll give you a pass on the banjo this time. Whew! it could have been worse!

Short scale tenor banjo is brilliant. I have a 1920s Slingerland open back, nicely inlaid and great bano. Against an accordion it is tremendous and mcuh better than a mandolin in my view. For Italian type stuff or bluegrass I use mandolin. I also love the sound of 5 string banjo providing it is done with a bit finesse. Obviously we don't want a session ruined by 5 banjo players playing Blackberry blossom, each getting their own break one after the other (as I've experienced several times) but bluegrass without a banjo seldom cuts it for me. I know there will be a flood of people citing great non banjo bluegrass but I'm just giving MY opinion.

many years ago i went through a dark time . I would hear a banjo and start thinking how exciting it would be to play all of those notes at breakneck speeds . it was a rush . I imagined myself holding it and running my fingers up and down its neck and shapely drum . yes...i can admit it today .....I was lusting . yes ...i know lusting is a sin . yes i feel remorse . i have never cheated on my mandolin since .

my therapy is going well .

I must confess I'm most well known as a 5-string banjo player and a double bass player...

I love my mandolins too, but I'm much more shy about playing them in public, they're more of a cathartic interlude for me. But, we're putting finishing touches on 2 Christmas gigs for next month, where I'm playing only mandolin, and we're practicing to record some session work in January, where I'll be playing a lot of mandolin, and I have to say I'm getting pretty excited about how things are going with these projects.

Almost just like with banjo and double bass, I've found myself drooling while playing the mandolin, so things must be going well.
