Revisiting: The Mandolin: A History

Mandolin Cafe has been active for many, many years. For long time members, many subjects have been revisited and revisited. For those newly interested in the mandolin many excellent subjects can get buried in the millions of posts and the casual peruser may spend years before he discovers a wonderful bit of information that long time members take for granted. For that reason I want to “re-mention” a book that I have known about for a year, but just recently ordered: Graham McDonald’s The Mandolin: A History. It’s available through amazon and is probably the best or only complete history of the mandolin family ever written. I cannot say enough good things about the book. Check it out!

Agreed. For a slightly lighter read - more of an overview - I would also recommend everyone check out Walter Carter’s “Mandolin in America” (UES, Walter Carter from Carter Vintage.) Outstanding research, very well written, brilliant photographs, and another book that every mandolin player should have on their coffee table.
