Thread: Holiday music

    Default Holiday music

With the holidays around the corner, thought it’d be fun to learn some good Christmas/Holiday tunes to get in the spirit of the season. I got the basic melodies down for Jingle Bells and Deck the Halls. What’s your favorite holiday tune to play on the mandolin?

Here’s the TAB and words for Jingle Bells, from Paul Hardy’s christmas book (abc version):

I've been working on Yura Lytkin's version of Greensleeves (What child is this).

He posted the tab and notation on the youtube page.

There are lots of great books available. Butch Baldasari's Evergreen and Allan Alexander's Christmas music are both great. Both have simple enough tab for beginners and you can add embellishments on your own.

My personal favorite to play is God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen (I like the way Dawg jazzed it up on his recording and try to emulate the beat at least. )

‘Pathetic?’ Not sure what you mean there Mike...
These 30 second vids you’ve done are great!
I really like your style, sort of bouncy energetic with open double stops.
Really good. I’m going to have to give it a try in the morning. Thanks.

When I click his link for the transcription, I get a google docs error page. Were you able to see the file?

Looks like the link is dead. I have a printed copy I can scan. Not sure if that's breaking any rules since he was giving it away for free...Click image for larger version.

I like Cafe member Old Sausage’s rendition of Jingle Bells from a few years ago, Silas Powell did a Monroe style Rudolph on FaceBook. I’ve been working on Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, Silver Bells, Winter Wonderland and variations for Deck the Halls and Jingle Bells. Lots of them to do, I find it not so hard to pick out a melody it’s getting all the chords down since these tunes aren’t typical 1 4 5 arrangements.
