According to his IG, it's a "new" old Gil ('84)

Guess that settles the old question about whether MAS ends with a Loar.....

I'm not a big fan of M.O. and what I perceive to be so many 'downer' songs. Sometimes I think Maudlin Orange would be a better name.

That's just me though and my taste. There's no denying those two are EXCELLENT musicians. Great harmonies etc. And that kid can play. He's a mandolin ambassador to a world of youngsters out there.

So he bought a different Gil since buying the Loar? I know he was playing one for a while before the Loar...

Such a great performance and love it when it’s just the two of them.

I think of Mandolin Orange's songs as who they are as songwriters and appreciate the depth of their lyrics. True, their musicianship is exceptional, as is the production quality whether live or in studio. Two excellent vocalists and their playing is exquisite! The latest album speaks to me with the "Mother-themed" songs, of which there are several. But then, I loved the Bee Gees' early Beatle-esque stuff which included "Massachusetts", "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" and "I started a Joke"... (pre-disco and, actually, the albums post disco, too). Jackson Browne is another artists that writes and performs thoughtful and slower songs. Well, we each have our own taste, huh? Thanks for the thread!

I like it, but the vibe reminds me of the Cowboy Junkies. It seem a bit too "safe " for their abilities. I suppose the live shows are a bit different.

I didn’t realize Mandolin Orange was as polarizing as Chris Thile. Here’s more fuel for the fire.

Finally able to watch the clip from the Today show.

First thought: "Gawd, they reverb'd the sh** out of that..."
Second thought: "that Gil sounds just as righteous as the Loar"
Third thought: "Sad that the nation doesn't get to hear Em play some fiddle."

    Excellent job.

I do find it to be the opposite of Thile, where he(Chris) is going out of his way to blow your mind. Buried in a Cape is an adventurous expose'(sp?) of Andrews chops.

I wasn’t trying to compare Thile to oranges.
Just seems when he gets mentioned people have strong opinions for or against what he’s doing. Not sure why that is.

I like what MO does. What you call “safe”, I would call “subtle.” To each his own. I would agree with you that Buried with a Cape is an adventurous effort. Great tunes and playing all the way through.

That Gil reminds me of the X-braced one I had of about that vintage. Great mando but couldn't afford to keep it.

    Such is life.

Didn't see that the mando was plugged in. Was the reverb from the microphone? Or what.

Well, that was just great! Thanks for posting this S.
I saw MO live early on around the 2nd album and a few times since. I've always taken to the music and songs they play. Andrew for a long time was kinda solemn but after he did the album and talked about his mom he seems lighter and I see him smile here and there. I'd saw the new addition has helped with that also.
Those folks are so good, and man did that mandolin sound nice.

Andrew has gone through a number of mandolins the past few years it seems, frankly the Kimble A he used for long time made it for me. A fine artist fortunate to have great instruments past and present.

I really like Mandolin Orange, and have for several years,
    However
It seems to me like they have settled into a very predictable arrangement. He sings lead, plays Mandolin. She Plays guitar, sings backup. Mid tempo, kind of introspective (okay depressing) songs. Fine, it sounds great.
But it's a tough thing for any duo to get multiple sounds.
But these two can do much more than that. Emily is a great lead singer and fiddle player, and Andrew plays a pretty good guitar and is a good harmony singer. I would like to see more songs with that arrangement, and maybe a couple of uptempo songs, maybe even something a little out of character, funny, or a strange cover once in a while to break up the set.
Otherwise, I love them, but I get a little bored after 5-6 songs.

They are masters of the melancholy..........

in the best possible way, like the Louvin Brothers, mood-wise and theme-wise, although the sound is different.

    Precisely.

It annoys me that so many folk/old-timey/grass fans have so little tolerance for sad music that goes beyond trite sentimentality. It's an emotion as deserving of expression as any other.

Every time MO comes up around here, the same folks grumble about the same things.
