Scott Skinner wrote Hector the Hero in A, and it's usually played in A. If no one has converted it to D, here it is in A, perhaps someone can advise you about online conversion programs to change it from A to D. Another option would be to learn it in A, then start on the open D instead of the low A, and play it from there. The tune covers quite a range though, but I think you could do this if you knew it well. Some of the grace notes and such might have to be changed. Good tune by the way. Good luck.

Robert Johnson's mother, describing blues musicians:
"I never did have no trouble with him until he got big enough to be round with bigger boys and off from home. Then he used to follow all these harp blowers, mandoleen (sic) and guitar players."
Lomax, Alan, The Land where The Blues Began, NY: Pantheon, 1993, p.14.
The tune database at thesession.org has several settings in D; you'll have to sort through and find the one you like:

P.S. it's under the "waltz" category there, but that doesn't mean anything. Tunes like slow airs don't have a separate section because there isn't a rhythm as such, so they end up in categories like this. Hector the Hero isn't a waltz.
Your wish etc.
I love this tune.
I just tried it in A harmonic minor, just out of interest, to see what it was like.
I ‘m wondering if the tremolo should be played in groups of six, or four?
I also love this tune.
There are versions in 6/8 and in 3/4.
I had played it as a slow waltz in A.
If I remember right, I had tried to do the tremolo in groups of six:
Some years ago, I found some very nice harmonies for Hector The Hero on a Japanese website:

This setting in G major is intended for two flutes, but I recorded it in 2013 with the melody on octave mandolin (no tremolo), and harmony on mandolin (with tremolo):

Nice to see this great tune being revived here again. Here is a version I posted back in 2010, with my late accordion partner Derek MacDonald (no relation of Hector's, he assured me).
The pictures are of Hector's memorial above the town of Dingwall.
