    Default St. Anne’s Reel

    Hey, Everyone!

Just a slow little (hopefully) purty run of St. Anne’s Reel on my MT. I wasn’t pulling sweet tone or the highs like this when I first got it. It’s singing like a bird after a few months of solid play.

Hope you like. There’s a little jamming at the end too. :-)

This is a great way of demonstrating that fast isn’t necessarily better. Well done!

    Really nice Kevin, well done!
The tune was actually in the Song a Week Social group here on MandolinCafe, really appreciated if you could post a link to that address too. the site is actually quite hard to navigate but here are some links, and good luck!

This is the song (or tune) list https://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/g...413&do=discuss
This is a pdf of the list so you can search for the the song/tune number: https://www.dropbox.com/s/35y9uxa1qr...0list.pdf?dl=0

(I really like your slow version by the way, it’s nice to see this diversity)

-just seen your number of posts, so apologies if, and whatever.

    Thanks, Simon!

I posted it over there. That's an amazing thread. Thank you so much for leading me there, as I hadn't checked it out yet. :-)

Yes, I like trying to play fast, but what I really like is the emotional response I have when I play with clear tone and really hear the fullness of the instrument. It seems like playing slower helps me do that, and then a song like "St. Anne's Reel" can sound especially beautiful for whatever the reasons are. I'm so glad you liked it, and thanks again for the song a week lead!

Ha, ha, I have that sometimes, emotions I mean.
I play a beautiful slow tune and then suddenly think, this is going great, the feelings, everything, so I jump up and drag out the tripod for the camera, then think oh no, the camera’s not charged up, so I pull out a cable, and it’s not long enough, so I tip out the box of electrical supplies, and the clatter on the floor sets the cat off, ‘oh, give me some peace!’ -that’s the cat saying it, not me. So I go downstairs to let her out and pick up the mail at the same time, oh more bills! And it’s raining so the cat tells me she’s not happy with the rain nor the music, oh make your mind up! She does, and chooses the rain. So I run back upstairs ready to start but there’s a convoy of trucks that have just starting passing my apartment, and then it’s quiet but now the Church bells opposite are clanging away, 32 times if it’s midnight, so I wait, and while I’m waiting I’m wondering, do I really want to record this piece with the cat wailing outside, ‘It’s raining, I’ve changed my mind!’
And I think, yes, me as well, I’ve changed my mind...

Beautiful sound and nice playing. Just not "St Annes Reel" as I know it, but names are flexible...

Cool. Is the one you know one of the sixteen settings on thesession.org https://thesession.org/tunes/103
or is it another setting/different tune?
    Can you post a vid?

    Great work!

IMO playing it nice and slow showcases the beauty of the tune.

I see you're in SC...I grew up in Boalsburg, but have been in NorCal since '96.....small world!

Kevin, Really great job! I play this song and know how far beyond my version of this tune your playing here represents! Excellent improvisation, as well!
