On the basis that Hofner- which was based in Schonbach, Czechoslovakia and was in limbo due to WW2 before restarting in Bavaria in about 1948, I find the date attribution at best dubious.Of course, after reestablishing the company then by the early 1950s and the start of exports to the UK, then it is quite likely that instruments may have been sold to the USA. However, there was a thread here that stated this mandolin type was made by Hoyer- another ethnic German firm that relocated from Czechoslovakia. Gagliano instruments were made by Kay after WW2 but there is no reason why competitive German made imports were not substituted at some point. My first guitar was a 12 string Hoyer and that's as much as I am going to write on that subject. The Hofner mandolins from this era are very different looking instruments with cats eyes.

    Here is the thread: https://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/t...ns-made-by-kay

There has been a steady trickle of Hoyer mandolins on ebay in the UK. Here is the most recent:https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vintage-1...0AAOSwo1FdmMfs

thanks for the links. Seems like all things old are new again.

Not lusting to buy, but curious what they sound like.

Those Hoyer mandolins in the UK are listed for high prices. Whether or not they sell at those prices, I don't know. That recent one I posted did not sell it seems but others have although I think the market has gone cold generally.
