A number of years ago, back when IBMA was in Nashville and one of the last years that Hans had a booth, I got to play 2 F style mandolins that were very string instruments. But the one I really lusted for was an F style mandola. That was an instrument that had depth, full tone and playability. It was priced above what I could afford at that time or it would have come home with me. I lusted for that instrument for years. Hans is one wonderful person.

Thanks for keeping this post going. With a closet full of mandos, I play my Brentrup 22V black topped F4 prototype and my reddish 22V F4 al the time. They are my go-to mandolins because I love their tone and feel in my hands. They only keep sounding nicer and nicer. Hans is a master and I am thankful for them. Doug in Vermont

I recently acquired one of Hans' mandolins. 20 years old! It's too much mandolin for me—I'm better off putting my resources into something with six strings. The instrument is a Model 23 with some features of the fancier Model 23F. It suffered a little cosmetic damage on the back, but nothing structural, and I believe a good finish guy could make it right.(edit: removed by moderator)

I commissioned the V8 from Hans, what a beauty. Unfortunately I let it go to Gerry in Ireland and after he died it ended up at Carters.

Here's the M21V Prototype that Hans built for me in 2003. It's an exquisite instrument and is still with me, along with my '07 M23V.

I have the same mandolin, not a prototype, but mine is not in such good condition. I have gigged exclusively with mine in less than perfect environments. The finish is worn off the back of the neck along with most of the color. It has many place where lacquer is gone and scratches and dings. It is a great sounding instrument and my main gigging mandolin. Hans knew how to build them, and is a great person.

Since we re-opened this older thread I figured to put this here.

Hans is sadly selling off his personal instruments in the classified ads: 3-point mandolin, 3-point mandola, and F5C mandolin.

Photos on his site of these instruments at this link.

I actually was first aware of Hans with his three-point mandolins and even wrote to him for a price but they were of of my league. I do still love the look but have owned and played a few three-point Gibsons and they were not to my liking in terms of tone and volume, so a modern interpretation was very appealing.

Still is. That blonde is gorgeous, though I’d prefer it with a shorter neck (and asking price).

That one has been making the rounds. It's changed hands at least three times- sold twice from TME.

I thought that was a great mandola on the occasions that I had to play it.
