Default Calton case tip over fix

I recently came into possession of a used Calton mandolin case..an early copy from Austin Texas... Seemed to have an issue that i'm told was later fixed ..
It would tip over like this when you started to remove your mandolin.... call me a weirdo but i found this deeply disturbing....

I like this. Simple answers to real world problems are the best. My Canadian Calton has similar looking hinges but the space the loop is allowed to travel is much narrower than yours on the top and the bottom of the hinge. I wonder if those hinges were supposed to be on a guitar case or something. Mine is solid when it's opened up. It stays flat on the floor.

    I love my Calton.

Please explain how this works. My guess is that the nylon strap changes the angle of the hinge so that the wire link supports at a better angle, keeping the top upright and it puts the center of gravity towards the bottom of the case.......... Right?

Looks like the tie-wrap keeps the lid from opening quite as far.

My Canadian Calton has similar hinges except the pocket portion of the hinge is narrower. Where the OP added the tie mine wouldn't need it as it would hit the end of the slot on the hinge. It keeps the case lid from opening beyond straight up. As it can't go any further it doesn't fall over on its own.

I still really wonder if these hinges were for a larger case like a guitar case or if they just weren't built to the original specs. Does anyone else have this problem with a Calton?

I'll try to remember to post pictures of my hinges tonight.

OK, here is a Canadian Calton. The gap on the hinge where the loop (I have no better description) travels appears to be about 3/8 of an inch on the top and bottom. The Austin Calton appears to be bigger than that allowing the case to open farther and fall over. I'll also note that the rounded edges of the case might be allowing to roll over easier.
