I love the Dogal RW92’s on my Brian Dean for classical!
Anyone have any experience with these other Dogal strings types?
I tried to searching for information and reviews without success.
Do you have any comments or suggestions for their application?
Instrument type? F hole, Oval, Bowlback
Genre? Jazz, classical, folk, Celtic (heavy metal!)
Are they similar to Thomastiks at all? What are their differences in tonal qualities, longevity and playability?
These are 3 types:
HR136 half-rounds steel
B92 flatwound steel steel
R47 flatwound laminated chrome metal
V30 flatwound bronze

They definitely look interesting. Never seen bronze flatwounds before!

If they are at all like the D'Addario FT74 strings, the phosphor bronze winding provides a noticable advantage regarding sustain. Good volume, very slightly dark "flatwound" tone with nice sustain, and very long lasting. My impression regarding longevity is that because they do not trap gunk between round windings, they stay alive a long time.

I have used D’addario FT74 strings. I prefer the Thomastiks. The Thomastiks last much longer and have a “jazzier” feel and overall response on my Phoenix Jazz Mandolin.

Yea, FT is round wound then ground flat, so half round, where flat wound is a flat ribbon winding..

My Issue with them was using a wound A. super thin core wire breaks fast,
if your RH stroke is used to getting more volume out of a plain A,
and picking not gentle..

So, use a plain A instead..

Keep going back to GHS A270 medium strings after experimenting with other brands.
