My nearest to 'mandolin mightmare'' happened at King Cross Station, London around 1980. I had my prized possession at the time, a 1932 black Gibson A and sat it next to me on the platform seat. I then decided to get very engrossed in a magazine and when I decided to move to buy a coffee or whatever I was probably one minute away from the seat wandering into the cafe when I remembered about my mandolin. Dashed back and there it was sitting there. Never been so relieved in my life. Cold sweat came over me followed by warmth.

Changing the subject slightly, I have to say that when Byron Berline's music shop burnt down but his Loar mandolin survived would seem to me to the ultimate story here.
