I've gotten totally addicted to this song, and I've got a question. Do you sing it in G and then play the reel in D, or both in D? I've noticed it seems to be done both ways

Wow.. interesting. I'm just learning this reel and I play it in D (I've never heard the ballad before). In this video, the first couple of times the fiddle player plays the reel, he plays in G - the final time he switches to D. Gives the sound some variety.

Listen to original tune "When You Fly" by my old band The Kindreds
We play this with our singer in the same key as the tune. It's part of a set of St. Anne's/Silver Spear/Miss Macleod's. iirc, our singer uses a capo on the guitar for the first two (he sings a verse, we all play St. Anne's through once, he sings another verse, we play again, he sings the third, we play and then go immediately into Silver spear) and tosses the capo away for Miss Macleod's. It's been one of our favorite sets.

Depends on how you want to play it.
Here are two versions of Bonnie Tammie. It’s another tune that is also a song AND is also part of that marvelous tune collection on mandolessons.com
