    Default Shade Tree Mando Repair

Just a little levity! My wife gave me a Chinese Rogue cheapo knock-around mandolin which became unplayable within a couple years. The top collapsed to the point that the strings were laying on the frets. Realizing it was the dumpster or a creative repair I put my biggest hole saw in the drill press .... &.... by wedging in the perfect sized block, made it playable again! Who sees the back anyway?

Hey, I've seen worse! Usually, the person doing it has no tools and uses a screwdriver and a hammer to make the hole! Good job on keeping it playing!

Actually, I've seen that kind of access hole before on 60's Gretsch guitars, covered by a fancy padded snap-on "Chet Atkins" belly pad.............

Gretsch did a masterful job of turning a negative into a cool custom feature!

I put access panels in removable neck upright basses often; neodyne magnets secure everything quite well. Soundposts, necks, repairs it should be mandatory for all working players.

Or drill a few holes and hint to 3 friends that "It's based on Loar's resonator design that was, ya know, quashed by that hushed-up lawsuit." In 20 years, it could become legend for, as you said, "Just a little levity!"

Love it. Now you can fill the whole thing up with expanding foam and never have a problem again

Can’t help myself... a better way to fix this problem would have been to force an innertube through the sound hole and inflate it. It would have been adjustable

You've turned this idea into an art form and from what I've heard about setting sound posts, a practical labor saving one at that.

I actually had a piece of bicycle inner tube that I had cut and sealed the ends to raise up a crack in a Strad-O-Lin so I could glue a crack. I couldn't get it exact but it worked. I was really afraid I was going to blow the entire body apart though.

Probably wouldn't do too much toward improving tone & sustain?

The inner tube idea gives new meaning to playing "air-mandolin"!

I want so much to build an emergency inflatable guitar using a co2 cartridge and a pin that you pull.

Very good! Mandolin players are so clever, thus there are many jokes about banjo players but not mandolinists!

A few years ago I was in a hotel and flipping channels whichever state I was in the public station had someone on with their bass and it was asked, Hey wat's that on the side. Looked a lot like your porthole. Now I can't help but wonder if maybe it was one you worked on. I haven't had a TV on in a hotel in many many years and I'm platinum club by the end of every year so this stuck in my mind. I vaguely remember someone asking jokingly if it was where they hid their treats.
