Default The Soul of Epirus - Petroloukas Halkias & Vasilis Kostas

A new recording just hit the Cafe's mailbox that merits our attention. It lands a little outside of what we normally publish as news (possibly my own limitation) but the music is so brilliant it deserves mention, and, the two musicians are touring the U.S. soon. That information follows.

The Soul of Epirus is a duet album of clarinet and Laouto, the latter a traditional Greek instrument of 8 strings. Clarinet player Petroloukas Halkias is a music legend at 85 years old. Vasilis Kostas is a young musician who recently graduated with a Master's from Berklee Global Jazz Institute after receiving an undergraduate degree from Berklee College of Music. Together the music they make on this recording that is playing on my PC at the moment is nothing short of stunning.

According to the liner notes, Epirus is an area in Northwestern Greece with a rich musical tradition. Indeed. I could go on but maybe the best is to just listen and watch. I find the music on this recording to be particularly moving and so brilliantly played.

So this album that's to come out soon with all this brilliant music gives us a chance to announce something we've been up to. Spent two days recently at The Mandolin Store in Surprise, Arizona, which by sheer coincidence has a used Laouto in stock. Once the Waterloo Mandolin Giveaway ends on the 27th we're going to have a feature article/interview about TMS and what it's like there. I've known Dennis for years but had only met a few times and wasn't quite prepared for what the store was like. Should be an interesting article hoping folks will enjoy reading.

I live in the same area (Ioannina) with those GREAT musicians.Petros' father Perikles Halkias was Andy Statmans'influence on clarinet in the 70's.I have seen them live...outstanding! I also like bluegrass and mandolin..mostly the old stuff that's why the only album I bought this year is Rebel's True Bluegrass Mandolin!
