    Default Andrew Marlins Loar

Am I right when I think Andrew Marlin (of Mandolin Orange) bought a Loar that he is now playing in the band?

Anyone know more about this, and details about the Loar?

    He is playing it here:

Yes its the well played/worn-but great sounding-Virzi removed March 31st 1924 one Tony at Mandolin Central had for sale awhile back-less than a year maybe 6-8 months ago, forgot the # without going through the archive, but its a killer example! I was thinking about buying before I found mine!

It may be #75950 but don't remember?

"I play BG so that's what I can talk intelligently about." A line I loved and pirated from Mandoplumb

Yep I believe we're correct Hendrik, I passed on this one and went for what I did as personally I like the later more delicate refined Loars and yes I love the Virzi sound "I can hear the brains of people shaking" but that's me
We all have our personal choice on tone and voice of a mandolin and that's a great thing. I'd like to take that Virzi Feb 18th.1924 that Gruhns has, Carters before, then Elderly before with the Blue interior Loar case "I believe there is a video of Chris Thile playing that later batch# Virzi Feb 18th 1924 compared to an early batch # Feb.18th 1924 Loar" On the video-I preferred the Virzi! Chris was crazy about the other one!

Care to link that comparison video? Is it the one where Chris is mandolin tasting at Carter's titled "Chris Thile plays two Gibson ferns?"
    Mandolin: Kentucky KM150
Other instruments: way too many, and yet, not nearly enough.

No its this video of two Feb 18th 24's.

I do love the early batch and have spent countless hours with #75305-the first known of the Feb.18ths, its my Uncle Gene's-no Virzi he's has since 68 or 69. I wish Chris would've played more of the Virzi Loar!

Cool, thanks. I think it's awesome M.O. got big enough for him to get a Loar. Well deserved!

When we saw them in concert in San Luis Obispo-- great concert by the way-- Andrew played the Loar. It was a tremendous sound in the mix as he played it so well, with great skill and artistry.

This video hasn't been out very long and I believe this is the Loar being played very well.

Andrews solo work on There Was a Time is just fantastic. I'm not good at describing technique but I think his musicianship is notable for his restraint - the notes he doesn't play and the space he creates for Emily and the other instruments when the larger band is playing.
