...you've taken a vacation 4,000 km away, and left your mandolin home because of the bother of lugging it around airports and on ferry rides, then you step out of a cafe, notice a guitar shop across the street, and end up flying home with a mandolin. (No hassle at the airport by the way. We now have an air travellers bill of rights that takes travelling with instruments into account.)
Robert Johnson's mother, describing blues musicians:
"I never did have no trouble with him until he got big enough to be round with bigger boys and off from home. Then he used to follow all these harp blowers, mandoleen (sic) and guitar players."

… you see a beautiful young woman in a short skirt with beautiful legs and all you notice is that the legs are getting in the way of seeing what kind of mandolin case she's carrying. (The corollary is: Your wife knows that you were looking at the mandolin.)

You call your wife up to ask, "Honey, what are you doing after work?" and she without missing a beat says, "I'm meeting you at the music store so you can buy that octave mandolin, aren't I?"

This may or may not have actually happened...

When your wife is on the phone with her sister, who happens to play violin, and you interrupt them to ask the sister if she’s has any old violin books you could borrow, and end up highjacking the conversation to talk about violins and mandolins for 10 minutes while the frown on your wife’s face is turning into anger by the second. Not that I’m speaking from recent experience or anything... lol.

You look at a Vick's logo and think of a mandolin pick!

You find a note dated two weeks ago from your wife saying she's left you.

When you have a mandolin next to your kitchen table, behind your living room chair, next to your side of the bed, and don't even open that closet door.

I'm not sure that this falls in with the the thread of 'thinking' . . . but last year I spent a couple of months in bed, recovering from surgery - and on more than a few occasions I went t sleep with my mandolin by my side.

After your hand surgery, you ask, "Doc! Will I be able to play mandolin?" She replies, "Sure, I don't see why not." and you sigh, "Great! I never could before."

... when you spot a bass banjo and you think it is a mandolinist's worst nightmare.

Reality check: It's everyone's worst nightmare!

When you're reading about Solomon building the temple and all you can think is what if some luthier found all those cedar boards, we could have some amazing old wood mandolins....

When you watch a Sierra Hull video not even noticing how attractive she is.

When your wife or girlfriend catches you watching Sierra Hull videos, and you can't convince her that you didn't notice how attractive Sierra is.
A talent for trivializin' the momentous and complicatin' the obvious.

Or more so, if your wife or girlfriend finds you watching a Sierra Hull video and you don't even have to convince them because they already know you're only paying attention to the mandolin
