Can anybody help me with this?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGreYV2o53s I have an Eastman MD 305 Octave.I can't seem to get it in standard tuning.Some say AEAE tuning is too much for this mandolin.Sorry for the dumb question but I'm a banjo player of 40 + years,having a bit of trouble in this new adventure.

Different tuning requires different string gauges, but it is possible. Raising GD to AE would call for somewhat lighter strings there, that's all.

My situation would be the exact opposite - grown up with violin playing, GDAE is the only thing I can do, and I might even do this to a 5-string if I had to.

You should be able to tune to AEAE with your current setup by placing a capo on the 2nd fret and dropping the 2 highest courses of strings a full note.
