Default Silverangel and Jacobson side by side

Hey mando friends. I am in possession of 2 great luthier-made instruments, A Silverangel Econo A and a Jacobson Nautilus oval-hole.

The SA is one I custom ordered last year with a Cedar top and Maple Back and sides. I usually put EJ74's on it and play with a BC CT55. It has an amazing deep rich woody tone, especially on the bass end and it can be quite loud.

The Jacobson is on permanent loan from Marty. I had expressed to him that I was interested in an oval and he let me take one of his prototypes that was hanging in his shop to play with indefinitely on the condition that if I ever decided I didn't want it anymore, that I was not to sell it. I felt like it was a little too bright for my taste, so I darkened it with some D'addario Flatwound strings and play it with a BC TAD 60.

The SA is my Goto, but I would recommend either to anyone interested in a luthier-made instrument

I always feel like the 2 instruments sound significantly different and I enjoy that uniqueness, so I decided to put the 2 together as best as I could with my iPhone and iMovie playing Angeline the Baker. I contemplated a more complicated tune as I have been working on a couple like 8 more miles to Louisville and Jerusalem Ridge, but Angeline is not only one I have been playing for a long while and I thought it could easily showcase the high end and low end of both instruments. I also personally love the sound of a tune being played an octave apart simultaneously.

    Enjoy:

Nice picking! They both sound good, but I couldn't hear much difference in the soloing, except that the SA seemed more bassy. The backup sounded different, but that's at least partly cuz you played differently

    Thanks Gunnar.

It seems notable in person how different they sound and that may not be translating in the recording via iPhone. And you're right, I did play the backing differently in styles that suited the individual instruments better. Regardless, I was pleased with how the vid turned out so I was excite to share.

They both sound god but very different to me. The Jacobson seems so much more chimey! I really liked that. The SA was nice and clear but certainly a darker sound it also sounded good. I lean more towards chime but then again I do like Gretsch guitars and SIngle Strats so I lean that way naturally.

Is that how it is in person?

Thanks John, "chimey" is a very good description. Initially I felt it's brightness was a bit harsh, but really feel like the flat wound strings toned it down enough that, yes, it's more of a chime particularly than the SA. Not to mention the oval hole sound vs the F-hole sound makes a good contribution to their difference, and I think probably to that chimey-ness you're hearing. My personal preference is the darker tone of the SA, not to say I don't like the Jacobson, I just play BG more than anything else which the SA is better suited for.

In my quest for making chimey/glassy mandolins, this was one of the first that got me excited about exploring a different direction in mandolin tone.
Here's a later instrument which is further down that road: https://soundcloud.com/martyjacobson/nautilus-40-reels

Very cool! I could so steal this thread with the questions coming to mind but I will save them for after I make a bit of progress on my project.

That mandolin sounds great, but the file is marked reels and starts with a jig
