Bill, yours (as you probably know) was the earlier, long scale symmetrical style.

Here is my case, also original (but not in as good a shape as Tim's) made by Bull's Head. Details from Steve Kirtley's case site. Mine has corduroy padding whereas Tim's looks like plush fabric.

Cool! I actually will keep the case for posterity, but will use a custom fitted Calton on order through Vernie at Bluegrass Mandolin. Vernie’s customer service, by the way, is superb!!

That is #682 - your photo shows this, and corresponds with a picture I had saved earlier of this one.

My mandolin fits nicely in the original case though I have some extra padding. I have a Small Dog case cover to protect the case and further protect the mandolin.

So, today I get to join this club. Just received my FedEx delivery of a style A, no. 2356 (purchased from Thunder Road Guitars in Seattle). Not having access to the Lyon & Healy books mentioned above, I'm wondering if someone could point to a year based on the serial number. Thanks for your help. -- Joe Bartl

    Hi Joe -
I am in a different location from my book, but in the meantime could you please post pictures (including label)? I, for one, would love to see. Thank you

    I have a Lyon & Healy model A SN# 1318 Style 5283. https://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/a...chmentid=79165

I use the Thomastic Mittels, and I love the sound. Very "un-Gibson", and more brilliant and scintillating, especially with a lighter pointier pick. I use it in classical settings.

I'm looking at Hubert's book right now, and while the caption under this label on p. 110 does indeed say 1925, the text on p. 111 notes that the label was in use from 1922 to 1928. So, the photo on 110 is from an instrument that Hubert dates to 1925, but not every instrument with that label should be presumed to be from that year.

Given that the renaming of Style A to Style 5283 occurs sometime in 1925, and given as well that we have other examples of Style A mandolins with this label bearing serial numbers above 2500, it seems reasonable to assume that No. 1674 is near the middle of a three-year run from 1922 to 1924, and is thus far more likely to date to 1923 than to 1925.

And just to finish up the thread for those who may be interested in such things, here is the Lyon & Healy in its new custom fitted Calton case. The Calton folks, through Bluegrass Mandolins, did a really great job. The case is designed to hold the mandolin with a Tone Guard in place. I have found that the Tone Guard helps balance the LH in my lap perfectly (as well as the usual reasons for using a Tone Guard).
