Thread: New case option

    Default New case option

My friend Geo showed up with his Gibson in this Pro Rock Gear case. Looked it up on Amazon and it's $79. Not even listed as a mandolin case, it's called a Folk and World music case.
I like the way it has a block that contacts the fingerboard and one on the tailpiece. It's similar to the old Stew-Mac and the less well made Gator but quite a bit deeper. It fits an F very well. Another affordable option.

This is a link to the case Jim is talking about in the OP:

This ProRockGear A style case doesn't look half bad either.

And they have more. Here is their mandolin case selection:

I got the dreadnaught case some time ago to replace the old hardshell. It's great.

The outside pocket looks huge. The pocket on my Gator will hold my IPad. Looks like this one is even bigger. This seems like a great option at a very reasonable price. Thanks, Jim, for posting this!

I'm always trying to figure out how to get the cases off the floor. I hadn't considered mounting them to the ceiling.

Agree, looks nice, thanks for posting! Is the quality better than travelite? I have one of the newer ones, andI like it, but the hygrometer has never worked (not a big deal to me), and I’ve already had to glue one of the screws holding the shell to the foam in place, and figure there’s more to come with use...

I would say there's less of an attempt to make it look high end with the shiny material and hygrometer, just utilitarian. My concern with a case is that the bridge be protected and with the neck and tailpiece supports there's plenty of room between the top and the bridge.
I'm not a fan of the strap handles but the Travelite internal latch drives me crazy.

I ordered one tonight for a mandolin I like too much to let linger in the gig bag it came with. If anyone wants an update after it arrives, I'll provide one.

Any idea if this would work for an old short neck Gibson A? There aren't a lot of reasonable options out there otherwise.

    Question Re: New case option

Neck cradle looks like it is closer to the body, so should be old A capable ..

    FWIW,
Eastman Fiber glass seems to be F4 &5 fitting.. so A4,5 should fit too..

Elderly sells them and can confirm .

I like the back pack carry option (D rings, 3)

[I have owned an A5 only one for many years ]..

They look pretty nice. Looks like they have a "blowout" price on the shaped Dread acoustic case at $75.
    Thanks for the head's up.

I ordered the Pro Rockgear mandolin case Thursday night and it arrived Tuesday. Shipping was $15 and the case was $50. I bought it to house a Kentucky that was in a gig bag. I was always nervous it would be damaged. This case seems perfect for travel. It weights about three pounds and comes with backpack straps. I wouldn't hesitate to put it in the overhead compartment of a train or plane. It fits an F perfectly, too.

It seems a little less bulky than the Travelite. It's also a little less padded and $30 less expensive. Travelites seem to be prone to latch failure and then there's the issue of paying for a hygrometer that doesn't work.

I like the front pocket a lot. It's huge. You can see here it easily holds my laptop. Between it and the interior compartment, you have plenty of room for accessories.

Finally, here it is next to the Modern Supercase (Remember those?) that houses my Arches. The Pro Rockgear is a little less bulky. The Modern is super protective and remains my favorite lightweight case, but they are no longer made.

Overall, if you are looking for an inexpensive foam case, this might be your ticket.

S’pose these cases will handle a mandolin with a tone guard attached?

The PRG case that this thread is about. General use, including all that you mention. Any feedback after a month of use?
