Default Tuning for Eastwood airline Octave mandola

    Hi all.
Iam looking at buying an Eastwood airline octave mandola. Its tuned C G D A. C.0.36 G 0.26. D 0.16 E 0.10. i play octave mandolin tuned GDAE. Does anybody know if i can restring from CGDA to GDAE and if so what gauge strings would be best.
    Thanks in advance. Dave

    I did that, the strings I used were 13.5p, 22p, 34w, 52w.

It works good as a 4 string with those gauges too.

It needed some nut work and bridge adjustments to make those gauges work.
Davey Stuart tenor guitar (based on his 18" mandola design).
Eastman MD-604SB with Grover 309 tuners.
Eastwood 4 string electric mandostang, 2x Airline e-mandola (4-string) one strung as an e-OM.
DSP's: Helix HX Stomp, various Zooms.
    Amps: THR-10, Sony XB-20.

If you put your current strings, scale length and tuning into http://stringtensionpro.com/ it will suggest a string set that will give the same feel as the current set and tuning. If you’re lucky that will match a standard set, if not somewhere like Newtone will make you a custom set.

Heres the reply i recieved from Eastwood.
We don't list an 18" scale on our string guide so the gauges you need would be somewhere between the Yellow and Blue column.
It may take a bit of experimenting to find the right gauge but i would start with 0.30, 0.24, 0.17, 0.13.

When I restrung my OM I used the string tension calculator on D'Addario's website. You can input your scale length and try various gauges of strings.
    -- Johnson MA-100 Mando
    -- Eastman MDO-305 OM
    -- 3 Seagull Merlin dulcimers (2GDG, 1DAD)
-- 1952 Harmony Roy Smeck guitar
    -- Ortega Lizzie Ubass
    -- Leigh Campbell electric violin
    -- Pfretzschner violin
    -- Glaesel viola
    -- Ibanez acoustic/electric guitar
-- Misc: a cello, 2 cigarbox guitars, charango, djembe, slide dulcimer.

Just an update Eastwood have been really good. When they do my presale set up they will restring the mandola to GDAE tuning for me. Dave.

    Hi Kurth,
Eastwood have restrung the mandola to GDAE tuning. They used the same gauge as you suggested. Regards. Dave
