I don't know that's it's the prettiest but it's definitely nice to look at. I usually also like the subtle beauty of things. This one time i decided to go "Big". Heirloom big...i have always preferred D18 over their fancy brothers and sisters for example.

    * well, there was that one Northfield too i guess.

I love these the urn type-reminds me of the almost certain death "I beat" as my Doc told me I had coming and a year left to live in late 2011 early 12!

Torch every time or an abbreviated Fern without the leaves etc around the truss rod cover is my taste. This Old Wave F4 inlay is definitely elaborate maybe but I don't see it as pretty, although each to his own, as they say.

This is by no means the prettiest ever but maybe the prettiest I ever did.
A lady who ordered a mandolin sent a drawing of this, otherwise I would have never thought of it.

Since I started the thread, I will post Audey Ratliff's work on my '99 R-5. More traditional than elaborate, I suppose:

In my opinion, for sheer beauty and balance, it's hard to beat the classic torch and wire inlay from Gibson.

That said, Don Paine (of Glenwood Springs, CO) did some truly lovely and imaginative work on his earliest Pomeroy F5 mandolin pegheads. Alas, the more recent Pomeroy models don't reach quite the same level of beauty -- although they're sounding better and better.

This one (#8) features a hummingbird hovering over two flowers:

My personal favorite is the Torch and wire with Handel Tuners.

Appreciate the verbal portrait you painted there with "audacious cacophony". With your permission, I'll put it up for consideration as a band name for the fellows I pick with (Gospel bluegrass).
Despite the high cost of living, it still remains popular...

Here's my Art Deco version of the Toronto skyline featuring the CN Tower. The truss rod cover is the reflection in Lake Ontario. Yorkville is a neiborhood in Toronto that had a very rich musical culture in the 60s and early 70s. This is my homage to the stylings of the D'Angelico jazz guitars of the 40s and 50s.

I am partly responsible for showing Ray the work of Antonio Tsai. He designed a few banjo and mandolin inlays and sent to designs to Tsai to create them on ebony overlays. This one he sent to Bill Bussmann to use on this F-4.

I’ve always loved the classics, torch and wire, ferns, flor de lis, but I’ve really been impressed with the work from Ellis mandolins, especially the ones that stray slightly from the norm, saw this fern/flower pot hybrid recently and I can’t stop thinking about it

Mr. Apitius builds some mighty fine stuff, impressive inlays, choice woods and spectacular sounds, not to mention drop dead gorgeous looking mandolins! I'll know all about it in a year and half? Somewhere along those lines
