Default looking to move, but I have no clue where ?.

good morning every one. here is my problem, I would love to get out of New York, I am sick of living in the city but I need to be by a good hospital because I have a rare disease called achalasia. two months ago I spent 2 days in the hospital & I had 3 doctors working on me when some food got stuck inside of me & would not move down or come back up. please feel free to throw what your thinking at me. I would love to move to a nice medium town were the people are friendly & the price of a house is less than NYC.

how much snow do you guys get up there. that last snow storm we had last winter was a killer, even with my snow thrower. at 64 it is not that easy for me any more. I am starting to slow down. plus taxes are they high up there. you know Gov Como is a tax & spend kind of guy.

How far from NYC are you thinking? Are you still working, or retired/similar? Birmingham, AL has like 10 large hospitals in a 10 mile radius, topped off with UAB, which is a level 1 trauma center and Children's

And if we're lucky there's no snow. but if there is, the place comes to a standstill

Fort Collins, CO. Great city, not that big, decent weather (milder than upstate NY) and enough playing to keep you happy. Lots of BG festivals out west, a LOT less people and some good hospitals.

    I love Brooklyn.
There is no place like it.
It's so not like Manhattan yet close by.

I think the first thing I would do is find the locations of specialists for my disease and go from there.

well, Yale New Haven Hospital is pretty good, I've heard. Which puts you in any of the cities and towns in fairfield county CT or over in Westchester.

PENNSYLVANIA! You have great hospitals in Pittsburgh plus a great music scene throughout the state and another plus some areas are very rural and many upon many hills! I should rephrase that Mountains!

I mean, you've basically described the majority of towns and suburb in the US.

You need to figure out what you want from your home, not just what you don't want.

For example, I've lived in and enjoyed
    — Northern CA (SF Bay Area: East and South Bay as well as Sacramento and Redding areas)
    — New Haven, CT
    — Provo and Salt Lake City, UT
    — Minneapolis, MN
    — Portland, OR suburbs
    — Nashville, TN (I currently live in a suburb)

Every one had great things going on, and the cost-of-living is all over the place but always cheaper than NYC. But also I know people who have hated every one of them.

So really, you need to figure out what you want and need (beyond just the hospital — almost every city has a good hospital somewhere — but can you afford the good one?) and work from there. Where are you going to work? How do you plan to make friends? Are you going to have a church or other social group? Do you want snow, heat, etc.? How do you feel about the local bugs? Do you need a local sports team?

If you can't answer those questions, start by throwing a dart at a map, assuming that's where you're going, and then asking the important questions about that place. Maybe you'll figure out it wouldn't work? Great! Do it again until you find a place that will.

But don't assume make the mistake of assuming that there's a perfect place for you and you just need to look hard enough to find it. Find a place that is "good enough" and then grow where you're planted.

Do NOT move to Colorado, it is awful. Weather is terrible, people are miserable, music scene is lousy. The doctors are quacks. I am telling everyone I can to not move here.

    I wish you well.

Mike your funny I could like you. going out west is too far., an as for Alabama kegcrowe. do you think a good old New York boy could fit in down there ?. me & you could get along just fine because we have a love of music. you got to remember New Yorkers think differently than the rest of the country on how we see things. a city with the Mayo clinic would be a great place for me if the weather was a little on the warmer side. warmer & a half way good hospital, an me & my wife could finish out the rest of our life's real nice. I would like to thank every one for your help.

Tony, contrary to popular belief, most southerners get along well with others and it's not really deliverance down here, banjo music aside. I know more northerners that are happy (or at least satisfied) with their move south than are not. Plus there's SEC football.

A road trip is in order. I'm amazed when I travel around and there is a predominately white populous, it just seems so strange. I'm just too used to an ethnically diverse city. Hispanic, Asian, Indian/Pakistani, Ethiopian, Eastern European, they all contribute to this unique place. I'd miss it for the food alone. High up my priorities list is a taco truck I can walk to.

I'd look for mid sized cities with a university that has a medical school. Mike, you are way too late. Californians have already ruined Oregon and Washington. Colorado is already half way there.

    Are you in the city?
I can't stand big cities, myself.
I last set foot in NYC the last day of my job (2012). Haven't been back and no plans to do so.

    The important question:
Can you get work somewhere else?

You might take a look around Orange County, not all that far away.
Or perhaps in the Albany region.

Dutchess and Columbia counties are beautiful, too.
But you need money, and you need a job to live in those places.

Someone said Richmond Va, I thought Charlotsville Va.in either one you'd be a Damn Yankee ( you're a Yankee if you come down here for a visit then go back, you're a Damn Yankee if you cone down here and stay) all joking aside you will fit in very well if you don't start telling us how they did it up north, we ain't up north don't want to be up north and don't give a flying flip how it was done there. Both Richmond and Charlotsville have good hospitals.

There's a large medical community in Durham/Chapel Hill NC (Duke and UNC) and a whole lot of acoustic music happening on most every day of the week, year-round.

Western Pa. The Acoustic Music Works is one of the best instrument stores for Mandolins and guitars, a healthy bluegrass scene , some of the best hospitals in the country, and low cost real estate. I like it.

kegcrowe, sorry I passed judgement on a group of people. that's not right, but I always put my foot in my big Italian mouth. as for me you can keep the football just give me some good bluegrass & folk music plus some nice people to talk too & I will be very happy. oh one more little thing how is the pizza, hot dogs, pastrami down there. that seems to be very important to the people from New York.

The North Carolina suggestion sounds like a winner. Big retirement destinations and Universities with prominent medical schools should have the hospital you need in a non-urban setting.

I can empathize. I've had seven operations on my throat and the scar tissue makes it difficult to swallow. But that is mild compared to what you are going through. Good luck.

Tony, I took no offense whatsoever with your comments. As for the food, I doubt you'd find certain things to NYC standards, but You might be surprised at some awesome choices.
