    Default Mandolin Mecca

Proud of this article written by our local newspaper and published three years ago today.

Mandolin mecca: Tracing Lawrence’s decades-long love affair with an old-fashioned instrument

Maintain what was said in there at that time. Lawrence is a tiny berg compared to sprawling Kansas City but the acoustic music scene here for mandolins towers over the big city that spans two states.

And the best music store in Kansas City, hands down, is in Lawrence.

Mass Street? Or is there another I missed? I enjoyed visiting Mass St when my son was at KU.

That'd be my guess. I couldn't talk my son into going to KU.

Very cool. Thanks for sharing that.
I always thought that Charlottsville VA is a mandolin mecca of sorts too.

What on earth brought you to that conclusion?

My dad was raised in Lawrence and I still have family and friends in Lawrence but I never knew about this. Not surprising, though, since I'm a little over a year into the mandolin journey. Mass Street has been on my radar for quite a while. Looks like its about time to make the trek from DFW to visit family and friends - and stop by the store to see if there's anything with my name on it. May even take it down to the park one night and play for a while to see if I can capture some of that 1890 experience.

Ain't never been to Mecca (though Medina NY's just a few miles west of here), but have had good luck finding great mandolins at Stutzman's and Bernunzio's right here in Rochester, the heart of the snowbelt...

On TDY to Ft. Riley in 1967, I did buy a Univox electric 12-string at a music store in Mahattan KS, though.

Well, I’ve never been to Lawrence,
But I kinda like the music,
Say the mandos are insane there,
and they sure know how to use it

    They don’t abuse it,
    Never gonna lose it
    I can’t refuse it

(with apologies to Hoyt Axton and Cory Wells)

This came up in our historical database today about an article published four years ago and I'm reminded it's a pretty good read that tells only a bit about the city of Lawrence and its history with the mandolin.

Mandolin mecca: Tracing Lawrence’s decades-long love affair with an old-fashioned instrument

The article neglected to mention our famed mention in the newspaper from August 5, 1890 about the city residents complaining of "late night trashy mandolin music being played in the downtown park."

Late night trashy mandolin music... Be still my heart

Great read Scott! Thanks for sharing and thanks for all you do for the mando community!

According to the Google machine, it's a mere 12 hr drive to Mandolin Mecca... not sure I'll be able to convince wifey that it's worth the trip

I've never been to Lawrence, but as a former Charlottesville resident, I'd rank the former in an altogether higher league.

C'ville would rank pretty low on the list of places in Virginia by most indices, I'd hazard. I'd have gone broke if we'd had a Mass Street music when I lived there.
