Thread: Uh oh THE Gibson may have a problem

Default Uh oh THE Gibson may have a problem

In a new trademark case Ohio State University is attempting to trademark the word "the". I wonder what this will do to THE Gibson?

    That way lies madness.

This recurring "issue" of "Ohio State University" vs. "the Ohio State University" has just puzzled me. I guess it has something to do with athletic designation...?

Beyond that, who cares? What's the big deal? No political quarrel intended, but it reminds me of Fox News trying to copyright "Fair and Balanced." I believe that got laughed out of court -- and if "fair and balanced" are considered words in general usage, what-the-hell would we say about "the"?

Oh well, Bill Clinton apparently tried to redefine "is." “When I use a word,” Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, “it means just what I choose it to mean—neither more nor less.” -- Lewis Carroll, Through the Looking Glass.

    That’s ok, we can get along without them. I, however, am claiming t, n, s, h, r, d, l, c, and m. In that order.

I once remember reading that Glenn Frey made a big deal about the fact that his band was called 'Eagles' without the 'The' in front of it . . . I guess he saw all of this coming, 50 years ago.

There's an old farmer in upstate New York named McDonald that I believe has prior claim to e, i and o.

Speaking of old farmers, when I trademarked my farm's name as my winery brand, the government people made me disavow (may or not have been their actual word for it) the word 'farm' from the trademark, even though it appears in the name. So they trade marked the first two words in combination with 'farm', but not the word farm.

Made plain sense to me at the time. I couldn't see any rationale in trying to defend a word as common and descriptive as 'farm' anyway. Who'd have thought 'the' would ever be an issue.

I really think the whole world has gone mad.

Shouldn't that be "Le Gibson"? Maybe it's Spanish? No, that'd be "El Gibson". Maybe Italian?

Wasn't Gibson the last name of the man who started the company? I assumed it was a boys name. Plus, to me "Le" is more unmistakably French. Ymmv

You are correct, sir. I guess I was hung up on how curvy and gorgeous the F-style mandolin is.

I thought Les Paul was the stage name of Lester Polfus (now you see why he used a stage name) sorry about the facts, I now feel like a party pooper
