Well, states can expand Medicaid eligibility to elderly persons who qualify financially. If the person has $125,500 available in various non-retirement accounts, the person certainly wouldn't qualify. But if the person only has $500 cash in his local bank account and a little ol' mandolin sitting in a case over in the corner and that musical instrument is considered by the case worker as an exempt asset, the person might otherwise qualify and enjoy all the cost saving benefits of enrollment.

Reminds me of those urban legends of a homeless person being arrested and the police find $20K cash in his pockets!

I sit around once a week swapping old tunes , with my old friends .. My Djangolin is easy to carry ..

My Carbon Mix is in tune for months.. My 1922 A4 was too nice to pass up ..
those 2 both have been played enough to need refrets ..

The pleasure of playing a high quality instrument has very little to do with where you play it. My mandolins can fill a room at home and fill the room at church. In the rare case that I'm in a jam session, they cut through just fine. The investment was secondary to the experience of the instrument. As someone said earlier, the value can be captured by my kids when the time comes. I just need to assemble a record of each instrument for their reference. As a former semi professional player, I'm blessed to had gathered a nice set of tools.
