    Default What does OP mean?

    Hello all.
I've noticed many members using OP in their posts. I think I know what it means, but I also thought I could jump from a 170 foot bridge into a river as a "macho" stunt to celebrate my graduating from college and getting a spot in Officer's Candidate School heading for the Marine Corp. Needless to say, after a full year of recovery, loss of the commission and a very sore back, I look back and realize my decision was less than insightful, actually falling into the category of abject lunacy.
So, just to be careful, could someone please inform me what OP means? Thank you.

    Cheers,
    Joe

Best of my understanding it is a reference to the Original Poster's OP comment / s.

Used two ways as "Original Post" and as "Original Poster". As in "I think the OP (Original Poster) was looking for advice" or "In the OP (Original Post) they were looking for advice".

There are a few internet-common things and some specific to this site. to the best of my recollection, YMMV is "your mileage may vary." "ICYMI" is "in case you missed it." OP, as has been mentioned, is "original poster" or "original post." NFI is "no financial interest." NSFW is "not suitable for work" for people who, say, watch stuff in the office. MAS/GAS/VAS is some specific instrument's Acquisition Syndrome (mandolin, guitar, violin). FWIW is "for what it's worth." MRW is "my reaction when." SMH is "smack my head." IMO or IMHO is "in my opinion" or "in my humble/honest opinion."

OK, guys, what did I miss?

OP is original post (#1) in a thread. Some people will use OP when referring to the individual that started a thread.

Guess your question was answered but I certainly hope the story you told was fictional.

Sorry to say, it is very true. Forced me to attend Grad school and, much to my dismay , become a College Administrator.

These cheat sheets keep getting longer and longer and if you go around to facebook, reddit, other mando/music forums, they all have little mini languages they use. Imaginge a guitar player visitng for firs ttime: "scroll envy", "blue chip envy", "MAS", "The Gil", "pinky chop" etc

If you grow your own, OP is "open pollinated", meaning the vegetable seeds you are buying were pollinated by bees and bugs, and some stray pollen from other plant varieties might influence the offspring. F1 is not necessarily an early Gibson, but a hybrid, an intentional cross between two strains of plants to get certain characteristics from the parent strains in the resulting progeny. For F1 you intentionally apply pollen from one plant strain to another.

Why this long wandering off the path digression? Because I've been gardening almost as long as I've been playing mandolin, and while I know what OP means on the internet, there is that momentary, half-second mental stumble my brain goes through every time I see OP in a message and decide which one is being used.

If that's too confusing, stop by my place, my OP and F1 'maters are coming in hot and heavy and we can discuss the merits of OP versus F1 versus the delightful F-2 I've been loaned whilst mucking down the best BLTs you've had in a while.

I kept getting email solicitations from my Wells Fargo bank suggesting I not suffer from FOMO any longer, and they could help me finance my dreams so I wouldn't be missing out. After about the 4th one I finally googled the term, and it means Fear of Missing Out. D'oh!

I don't know who is dumber in this, me or the WF marketing department that assumes a 61 year-old man automatically knows this kind of jargon and would willingly dive deeper into debt.

They lend money to elderly people? Nobody offered me money in years.
More probably, the acronym is a discrete way to filter out potentially short-lived debtors...

Yeah, I am wondering about that, too. It cannot be worse than the bridge you already told us about. Don't be shy.

FOMO does mean fear of missing out, unless you're a millennial, in which case it means fear of moving out (of your parents house)

one of my pet peeves at work are their many uses of acronyms, so I made up a few of my own spoken as words and then got to thinking why stop there, I could just make up my own language...my few co-workers and I use my word IRDGAF quite often...
