    Default Engraved Truss Rod Cover

Several years ago I bought an engraved truss rod cover from First Quality before Bill Sullivan passed away. I've tried to get them a few times and I finally contacted the fine folks at www.custominlay.com regarding their engraving. I had already purchased a plain pearl cover from them previously. It arrived today it's excellent. If you desire one check them out.

That's very nice Mike! A few years ago I had Ed Weber "don't know if he still is in business" he made me a TRC in old ivory with my wife's portrait scrimshawed in and it turned out great, it took awhile and he had to redo it as he messed up but the final was superb, but he gave her glasses and she hardly wears them but still elegant and nice, I'll try and get a photo to post in my spre time-yeah right as my 2 year old is pouncing on my back and rubbing my head as I write! LoL!

    Very tastefully done Mike.

The good news is now people know who you are when you're playing your mandolin.

The bad news is now people know who you are when you're playing your mandolin.

Btw, is that your 'Dola? Or are you using FlatTops (which have a wound A course)?

That's the mandola. I have a similar cover on my mandolin. I was just excited to find another source for them. I bought the previous one at First Quality. FQMS was such a great resource. I just like the look.

Why would I want a truss rod cover with your name on it? Looks nice though.

Yup, I don't know anyone who knew Bill who doesn't miss him. I only talked with him on the phone a few times, and I miss him. Interestingly, I can think of a number of people who are now missing from our circle and who had that affect on me.

I only hope when I'm gone, people feel the same way about me.

I just received the one I ordered from these folks. Great product.
Only issue was that the bell was slightly too wide to fit between the two lowest tuner capstans. I had to file the edges down a little in those areas to make it fit. (Sapphire fine grit fingernail file worked well.)
But no big problem and it turned out great looking. IMHO

FYI: Hole distance is 1.9375" center to center. Close to 49.2mm. Unless you tell them otherwise.

Mike, this brought back fond memories of FQMS. Bill Sullivan engraved this one for me back when their "warehouse" was his basement.

That looks great Todd. FQMS had that double line font. Really nice.

It's not a stupid question. I tend to want to make my mandolins (and guitars) that are supposed to look like vintage instruments look like vintage instruments. Henry Phillips developed the Phillips head screw in the 30's. It took years before it was used in the stringed musical instrument industry on a large scale. I like that vintage look so I try to keep all of the screws I use on these instruments as slot heads. In the last two weeks I've been rebuilding a 1969 Japanese guitar model that I owned when I was 18. Not a single slot head screw on that one and I don't intend to change them.

Somewhere here there's a thread about my search for slot head screws to replace the screws on a set of Gotoh tuners. I like the way they look better with the slot head screws. Roger Siminoff sold a set with slot heads and hand burnishing for a premium years back. Waverly tuners come with slot head screws. They understand that market.

When I find new old stock nickel plated and brass screws that are round head with the slot drive I buy them. I keep a supply of the screws available from Stewmac on hand. I'm surprised I never changed the screws on the mandolin but next string change I will.

It's just about the look and nothing more.
