Well dang, sounds as good as it looks. Thanks for posting this.

Flatiron A
Way too many other instruments
Sounds and looks great in that video, Skip. What strings do you have on it? Also what bracing did you use? I am guessing from the video that it isn't x-braced. Sounds relatively mellow.

Sounds mighty fine, what was that last hornpipe tune-Is it Monroe Hornpipe? I can't wrap my brain around it right now!
Jim, the bracing is parallel tone bars.
Will, the tune is Fishers hornpipe. I can play it better if I’m not recording. As soon as I hit the record button, I start messing up!
Yep that's the Hornpipe! I knew it was one of those pipe tunes. Isn't it funny how some of us can play super well but when recording comes to mind at least for me I don't play the tune the "best" some of the times anyway-other times I can nail it, like playing out in a group sometimes you can nail it and other times well not so much! I guess it would be different if it was ones job! Playing music for a living/playing all the time?
I for one never play the same song the same way, I put my own spin on things as my mind tends to wander? I remember playing a Monroe tune with another pro-player who was on mandolin and he says "that's not how Monroe did it" I said "well I'm not a Monroe style player!"
Anyway very sweet mandolin, the whole style and looks, its a bit thick/woody sounding for my tonal preference, but I'm so used to the old 20's-30's F-5 sounds from what I play, but for a different sounding mandolin you sure nailed it I think. I'd happily play one "if it had a pick guard-LoL" Have you ever made an F-5 with that styling? I bet that would be harder with the curves/violin type overhang but I guarantee with your awesome work it can be done!
I like the tone of that mandolin, at least what I can hear from the video. I agree with Bill that it has an almost oval hole sound or at least a hybridish and I think the tone bars make it sound a little more mellow than x-braces. I love the look and if i were looking to expand my arsenal... well, you know. BTW I, too, would want a pickguard and maybe I would ask you to make me one inlaid with "LOL".

So pleased to see another fine builder working in this style! As to bracing, my understanding and experience is that (all else equal) tonebars will provide a more focused and projective sound, while x-bracing will result in a rounder, more enveloping response. Isn't that the "common wisdom," if there be such a thing? I really like the "hybridish" sound of this mandolin, but if I had to guess I might've thought it's X-braced.
That is funny. I thought it was the opposite. I have one of the early carved Flatiron A5-2 which I bought new in 1983. It has x-bracing and has a bright focused sound that projects well. My ovals are just the opposite with their typical transverse brace and round soundhole. I think the A5 with tone bars should be somewhere in the middle.

Did you get permission from Joe Campanella Cleary before you made that...????
(jes' kiddin' !!)
Looks great.
uh-oh... somebody might be getting some orders... and deservedly so! as they say in France... c'est class!
I appreciate the compliments! As to the tone of the mandolin, I like a lot of bottom end in mandolins. I fell like they are "tinny" enough as is. Contributing to the woody tone is the smaller F holes. And, I think part of the tone you are hearing is from the Silk and Steel strings. I have played this mandolin quite a bit since I put the strings on. I didn't have any J74's to put on and I'll change strings next week and do an updated video to see how it sounds with the J74's on it. Thanks again for all the kind words!
Silk and Steel will warm up a mandolin for sure! I bet she'll sound way different with some J-74's or 75's. Still that's one sweet machine, I've always loved that look, the violin style, top and back overhang, the color, very nice. I knew there was another builder who did these I just couldn't think of the name till it was mentioned above. Great Stuff.
Wow! Design, craftsmanship, tone...the complete package. I love it.
Joe
Some mandolins have style, this one has class.
Well done !
Thanks again for all the kind words! I'll change strings soon and repost a video.
Here’s a link to the video I did with a string change. I removed the GHS silk and steel and put on J74’s.

NICE, that's what that baby needed, the J-74's really brightened her up-much better sounding! I want one, with the florida and a guard-LoL! Very sweet indeed. With some serious play It'll open up immensely.
Will, if you twist my arm, I’ll build you one with a florida and a pickguard!

Regardless of the strings, that's a great sounding mandolin!
I sure don't need another mandolin but I would love to add that one!!!
In addition to playing it I would just like to look at it every day and run my fingers over those sides and then inhale the smell of that varnish and wood. Just a lovely thing really! Soooo tasteful!
I wonder why mandolins are not built that way more often? How does it compare for the labor expended Skip?
