Liebe (Richard Strauss, Op. 42/1, 1899)
Richard Strauss: 2 Männerchöre, Op.42, TrV 194
1. Liebe (Nichts bessers ist auf dieser Erd)
This is a very obscure song by Richard Strauss, originally written for unaccompanied male chorus and published in an 1899 songbook commissioned by Kaiser Wilhelm II. The libretto is a Dutch poem from 1602, in a translation by Herder. The original vocal score is at IMSLP:

I have adapted the tune to a classical mandolin quartet (two mandolins, mandola, mandocello), using a transcription for woodwind quartet by Jenne Van Antwerpen at Musescore:

I've transposed the piece one semitone up, from B major to C major, which sits much better on mandolin.
1890s Ceccherini mandolin (x2)
Mid-Missouri M-111 octave mandolin
Suzuki MC-815 mandocello

Re-recorded and re-uploaded -- the previous version didn't sound very nice when I listened back. Apologies.
