Hearing Horns in Solos?

Do other people ever "heard the sounds of horns " in their playing? I may be exposing myself as a kook and that's ok. The higher up the mando quality "food chain" I have climbed the more there seems to be a horn quality to single notes when soloing. I first noticed it on my Red Diamond Vintage A5. Should I call for the professionals in the "white coats"?

No, but sometimes I get a hint of very good chimes or bells.

Funny you should ask. My Weber Yellowstone 2Pt sounds a bit like a basset horn sometimes, especially the lower register. But that probably doesn't qualify as a 'real' horn. I like it, though. Kinda growly.

My RD sounds pretty pure. Not at all horny.

Monroe's band came about in the big band era. The mandolin bounces between being the snare drum and the clarinet.

On a similar note, one night in a jam on stage at a local venue a lady was playing an electric mandolin that was out of tune. My friend Larry looked at me and said "Is there an accordion playing?"

I think it depends on the insurance company. Insurance companies focused on the needs of musicians will allow you to determine its worth, and establish the premiums accordingly. A non musician focused insurance company, or a rider on your homeowners, can be nutty. Its amazing what "replacing in kind" might mean to them. Read the fine print and ask the PIA questions.

Actually, though, a mandolin sounds most like a double-coursed banjo, let's face it.

I know what you are talking about. I get it on my G and D courses when the mando really wakes up. Some kind of magic happens and certain notes just project like crazy. I too think of it as kind of a growl. I assumed it was maybe some kind of imbalance/imperfection in the instrument, as it is not uniform with mine, but I really like when it happens. It feels like amplification with a little distortion or something.

No, but the neighbor says, "I liked hearing you play your piano earlier," after playing my mandolins when I haven't touched our piano that day. I guess a mandolin out a window or through the walls could sound like a piano... I live in a town-home.
